publishing for dropbox?

I'm choosing the Web publishing option for my courses so I can add them to my Dropbox to show some of my work. I would love to be able to do an online portfolio but can't find the time to get that put together right now. So for the time being, Dropbox will have to do.
I've never done this before and I'm stuck. Once I publish it, do I use the Zip option? I tried to add the zip folder to Dropbox, but it doesn't look like the example in David's tutorial here https://player.vimeo.com/video/149185910. I also couldn't open any of the files and see my course. I know I'm doing something wrong, just not sure what it is. I'm pretty sure I'm over-complicating this!
Thanks!

JiKill you do not need to zip the folder. Just put the entire folder into Dropbox and copy the public link to the story.html file. Share that whit whomever you want to view the project. Dropbox can be a bit slow sometimes but I have used it effectively before.

I still can't get this to share. In David's screenr, he chooses "copy public link." When I right click on the story.html file, my options are:
1. Browse on Dropbox website
2. Share link
3. View previous versions.
I chose "share link." The link is trying to open the file from my c drive, so I know that's not the public link.
I'm so frustrated with this! How do I get the public link that links to dropbox and not my c drive?
Hi Jill, I know how you feel as I had a little trouble.
I find that if the output is in the public folder and then I go to the Dropbox website, sign in and grab the copy public link option by right clicking then copy and paste into a new browser window it opens from Dropbox website and can be shared fine.
Hope this helps, Louise
Hi Jill,
Yes - the link on c:> IS the public link - remember - it synchs to the networked DB folder.
Here's how I give people permissions.....
Bruce
So I definitely misunderstood the link. I was assuming the public link would start with the website. Oops! Thanks for the clarification.
So when I try to share it, I still can't open the link. It's a blank screen. I don't know if it makes a difference that my option doesn't say "copy public link" but rather "share link."
Maybe I shouldn't be using IE?
Here's another question: when I click "share link" it asks me to enter an email address or there's also a "get link" option. I clicked the "get link" option and pasted the link into a new tab in my browser. It takes me to this:
The link is https://www.dropbox.com/s/kf1tdcdbnwni4fb/story.html.
I'm trying to share a simple demo I've made about bones. Can any of you see the file from this link? Maybe it's me or something on my computer!
Jill;
Sorry should have been more clear in a couple of areas. You need to be in the dropbox website logged in to get the copy public link by right mouse click. And yes the folder needs to be in the public folder of dropbox.
Tim
Tim,
Even doing that, I get the same link https://www.dropbox.com/s/kf1tdcdbnwni4fb/story.html. When I'm logged into the Dropbox website and click on the story.html file, should it open the project in a new browser?
When I click on story.html, it opens a new tab in my browser, but it's just a blank page.
Tim,
I know things on DB changed a while ago - I do my right-click from the LOCAL folder, I seldom use the Web version.
Bruce
I noticed that Bruce and TIm were getting the link from different places. To me, it makes sense that I should be able to get the link from either place. The problem is that my link doesn't work. :(
Jill;
I have adobe connect. do you want me to set up a meeting and walk you through this online?
Tim
Tim,
That would be awesome! People like you (and there seem to be a LOT of them around here) are the reason I love this community. There is always someone willing to help!
Let me know what time works for you and I'll work around your schedule.
Thanks so much!

Jill;
I am in the office only for another 30 minutes today and then out on the road all day tomorrow. If you get this right away we can try now or otherwise how about Wednesday at 0830 Central Time?
Tim
Tim,
I had to leave the office early today. Can't miss my son's soccer games
I found a couple more screenrs that show how to publish and for Dropbox. I'll take a look at those tonight or tomorrow and see if I can figure it out. I'll let you know. And if not, we can plan on Wednesday morning.
I knew the answer was simple. Thank you, Tim! You are a lifesaver

I'm having the exact same problem, wondering what the ultimate solution was?
Hi Nicole! Could you share what your issue is? Is it that you do not have a Public Folder in your Dropbox perhaps?
When I opened it in dropbox online, I was able to 'copy public link' so I'm good to go. THanks!
Awesome. Glad to hear it Nicole and thanks for the update. Just let us know if you need anything further.
Hi,
I am having the same problems. I am confused about the Public folder as Dropbox clearly says you don't have to have your stuff in the public folder, right? Here is what they say:
Please note: New Dropbox accounts created after October 4, 2012 no longer have a Public folder. Don't worry! Every account created prior to this date will still have a Public folder. If you would like to enable a Public folder on a new account, see the instructions below (Creating a Public folder).
However, all the extra functionality provided by the Public folder is now accessible anywhere in your Dropbox. Now all you need to do to share and preview files and folders in your Dropbox is select Share link via your computers, phones, and tablets. Take a look at Dropbox links here or go to this article to see how it works.
FYI - I am creating folders inside folders. Is this a problem?
Any help would be appreciated as this is the medium I am using to showcase recent work. Thanks in advance!
Hi Denise,
I actually just started using Dropbox for sharing example files that I've published. Yes, you need to have the actual "Public" folder enabled by using this link. I made the mistake of adding one manually and it will not function the same way.
With published content you want to share, specifically HTML files, you'll want to have it in the folder that the link above creates. You can create as many folders here as you'd like.
I recommend installing the desktop application as well. When you've published your project to the "Public" folder and the upload has completed, you'll want to click on the HTML or HTML5 file for your project so that it's selected. After it's selected, right-click on the file and select "Share public link". You should be able to test the project with this link and share it with others.
Now, if you just want to share files with others to download, you can have them elsewhere.
I hope this helps!
I'm having some of the same issues as those posted above. I've been asked to create a place to post a few tutorials I've created which can be seen by people outside our sharepoint intranet server. I explored making use of blogger or wordpress, but to my understanding these will not work. Then I found the video on how to use Dropbox, but since I just created a dropbox account, I do not have a Public folder. I don't have the means to upgrade to a pro account to use this feature.
Is there something easy I am missing? How/where can I post this tutorial so it can be accessed by people who do not have access to our intranet?
Hi Linda,
Welcome to E-Learning Heroes!
You don't need to purchase anything to enable the "Public" folder on Dropbox. You just need to click this link. That page will enable the public folder that can be used for hosting and sharing content as a web page through their servers.
Other options:
Also, Mike Taylor shared a blog post on sharing your e-learning course on Google Drive. Might be worth a look :)
Good luck!
It should be noted that you know need to have a Pro Membership to use the Public Folder in DropBox.

I have a doubt concerning to publishing in DropBox or Google Drive, it will remain private or eventually it will be searchable? I mean, Googlebot can crawl this content? My client want to share quickly his work-in-progress with his international team, but this content is confidential.
Maybe they must add a <meta name="robots" content="noindex"> tag in story.html?
Hi Favio,
You typically need to share the public link, but likely it's not something that anyone could guess and it's generally not indexed for searching - but if confidentially is an issue, I'd look at other hosting options that may provide more security and the need for log in credentials.
