Publishing to LMS - unit status updates, course status doesn't!

Apr 02, 2013

I published my first Storyline course to our Training Partner LMS. The course consists of a single unit. I want them to pass the course only if they view at least the first 5 slides. Right now the unit status is updating to Completed when they view 5 or more slides, just as it should...but I just noticed that the COURSE status is NOT updating...it stays stuck on Enrolled! Here are my settings:

On the Storyline side:

Output Options: SCORM 1.2.

Reporting: Report status as Passed/Incomplete.

Tracking: Track using number of slides viewed (with a value of 5 slides).

On the LMS side:

Pass score % and max units fields: blank

Unit properties:

Type: CBT

Max score: 0

Weight: 1

Pass score: 0

CBT Type: SCORM (AICC)

I could make the course status update by changing the CBT type in the LMS to SCORM (Asset),but then I'd have to remove the condition in Storyline that they must view the first 5 slides -- they'd pass simply for opening the unit. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? It's probably an error with my setup on the LMS side, but maybe someone here publishes to a similar LMS?

Welcome to E-Learning Heroes, Dennis!

Have you tested your course in SCORM Cloud? This would help us determine if the issue is Articulate related or if it's on your LMS's side. It looks like you're using AICC content. If so, please take a look at the article below for testing information:

Articulate Support - Testing AICC content at SCORM Cloud

If it appears in SCORM Cloud as well, we'd be happy to take a closer look at what might be going on.

If you can't replicate the issue in SCORM Cloud, it's probably an issue that you'd want to take to your LMS team.

The articles here and here may also help clear up common LMS issues.

Let us know how it turns out.

Thanks, Dennis!

Thanks, Christine. It's SCORM. I tested it on SCORM Cloud just now and the same thing happens there...the unit status updates, but the course status does not. It's got to be a setting somewhere, no?... Unfortunately my LMS chose today to develop an error whenever we try to upload, so unfortunately I can't get a sandbox version over to it to play around with LMS settings.

Good morning Dennis,

Sorry to hear you're still working with this problem. Sounds like there were some additional issues with the LMS you're using, too. If you'd like, we'd be happy to take a look and see if we can offer some suggestions or solutions. You'll be able to attach the .STORY file on the second page of the following form:

Articulate Support - Submit a Support Case

Please be sure to include a description of your issue. Please also include the URL for this thread in the form. Also, please share the case number with me. You're welcome to do so here, or in a private message. This way I can follow the progress of the case and update this thread.

Thanks, Dennis!

Spoke to the LMS vendor today. Their rep believes the ONLY way the course status can update in their product is mathematically -- that is, the course must feed the LMS a score in order for the LMS to update the course status.

In other words, using the "number of slides" method to signify passing would work if this were just one unit of a course and other units were scored...but won't work if it's the only unit and there aren't any other units that can send a score back.

As it happens, the reason we were allowing a passing grade after just 5 slides is that for half the users, the second part of the course doesn't apply and they are welcome to skip it. So actually this gives us a way to accommodate the need for a score and be a little more elegant at the same time. I'm going to add a True-False slide after the fifth slide, assign 10 points to both answers, eliminate the feedback, set one answer to jump the user to the second part of the course and the other answer to jump the user to the last slide, and when I re-upload the course to the LMS, do so on a scored basis with 10 points needed to pass.

Now I just need to figure out how to delete the Submit button from the player on a question slide.

Hi Dennis,

Thanks for getting back to me! You idea sounds quite brilliant actually - I hope that works out for your course.

I also wanted to mention that you can remove the "Submit" button pretty quickly. To do so, open your True/False question in Slide View. Click on the cogwheel icon for the main layer of the question. You'll be able to disable the "Submit" button from this window.

It should look like this:

I hope this helps!
