Publishing to Tin Can API

Oct 18, 2017

The set of information communicated by Storyline is the same for SCORM and Tin Can API - as discussed in this article:

However, Tin Can API can provide more information than SCORM, such as "ability to record any relevant activity, any mouse click, answer, etc."

Here’s an article which discusses the different LMS standards.

My company would like to track information beyond quiz answers and latency, such as use of tabs, mouse clicks, changing answers, etc. Does anyone have a strategy for gathering this information from an Articulate product? Or, does Articulate have plans to provide full Tin Can API functionality with products in the future?

Hi there, Sue. Thanks for sharing your concerns here!  I'll defer to the community for strategies people use to gather the other statistical information beyond the quiz data Storyline sends to an LMS.

I'm going to submit a feature request on your behalf to share your need for more robust API reporting with the team. I'm glad you took the time to write!

Did anything further happen as a result of this post - and, importantly, did you manage to pass more information than the standard stuff to your LMS?

I think this topic will become increasingly important as eLearning continues to become more sophisticated with increasing levels of gamification and collaborative learning. ...And it's not only passing information to the LMS, it's about getting information from the LMS using the Tin Can API. A simple example is - Why can't I get the learner's name from the LMS? The LMS knows who the learner is and the SCORM and Tin Can API 's both support this request... Is there a facility in Storyline to utilise this data request?
