question about variables during review quiz option

Feb 01, 2013

Is there any way to put a trigger on the PREV/NEXT buttons that appear automatically when someone chooses "review quiz"? Or is there any way to get rid of the PREV button there?

My issue is this: I've got a quiz that draws from a question bank. On each slide I have a variable that increments to show what question number the student is on. If the student chooses to review the quiz, I trigger the review results button to reset the counter to 0 so that the question numbers are correct while reviewing. That works fine unless the student hits the PREV button during the review, in which case the counter increments when it should go down (For example, if a student were looking at question #5 and then hit PREV, it would show what's actually question #4, but it would label it question #6. When she hits NEXT, the next question is labeled #7.)

I tried making each slide reset to initial state when revisited, but apparently that resets only interactive objects, not variables.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks so much,

Dorothy

Good morning Dorothy,

I'm not sure if this will work for you, but Steve Flowers posted a suggestion over in this thread for hiding the Next and Previous buttons during quiz review. Personally, what I would do is remove them both and set up a custom Next button.

Let us know how it goes. Hopefully this will work for your project!

Thanks,

Christine

Christine,

Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to Storyline.  Thanks for pointing me in the direction of Steve Flowers' workaround to get rid of the PREV/NEXT buttons on the quiz review option.  That'll help for a few of my projects.  Unfortunately, many others use sound, so I need the little volume control, and apparently the workaround requires that you have no PREV/NEXT/SUBMIT/volume/slider buttons anywhere in a project.  So I'm still stuck.  I've submitted a feature request, hoping that by the next update we'll have more control over the quiz review option.

Thanks for your help,

Dorothy

Hi Dorothy,

Though not very easy to implement, I have come up with a way to solve this problem. It might be difficult for very large quiz banks, but it does work. It uses a variable for the overall question number, and then individual variables for each quiz question which take on the value of the overall question number when that slide timeline begins. When in "review quiz" mode, a variable prevents resetting the question numbers as you use the next and previous buttons. Sorry if I didn't explain that very well. I have attached a sample file if you'd like to take a look.

Vince,

That's a great workaround! I had reset the question number counter to zero and had made a true/false Review variable, but I'd gotten hung up on trying to increase or decrease a variable based on the status of Review, rather than using the clever plan you did. Your trick is going to neaten up all sorts of my projects.  Your sample file made it very clear how to implement your idea.

Thanks so much for your help

Dorothy
