Question Bank did not random after uploaded to LMS, Tracking issue

Oct 12, 2014

Hi,

I've encounter some issues regarding

  • Contents I've input as question bank after I upload to LMS website did not random each time i try to view the random slide
  • Tracking of total slides viewed have some problems whereby if there is 3 slides, and when I clicked back and forth slide 1 & 2, the tracking states passed even though I did not view slide 3 at all.

Please help! It's URGENT.

Thanks and regards,

Emalyn

Could it be due to the new update version of storyline? Cause in previous updated version this does not happen for the question bank random issue. My version is UPDATE 6: 1407.2208

By the way, I followed this method.

http://www.articulate.com/support/storyline/how-to-use-question-banks-to-create-random-branching

But even now in the preview area itself it does not random when I click back and forth the Back-Next button.

HI Emalyn,

The issue with tracking by slides viewed and all the slides begin within a question bank is an issue we've reported to our QA team. Currently you'd need to choose track by a results slide or remove the questions from the question bank.

In regards to your randomization issue- the previous button works as a browser back button would, so bringing you to the last slide you saw. Possibly you could explain a bit more about what you'd like to happen and the community can help you look at some design ideas for this.

Hi Ashley,

For the slide tracking issue, meaning at the moment there is no other option beside having tracking with results slide?

As for the random thing, I was hoping that each time i click to view the random slide, it would be a different slide appearing.

Example:

1 - normal slide

2 - Question bank contains slide 2a, 2b, 2c (randomly showing only 1 slide)

Attempt: Slide 1 viewed > click NEXT > Slide 2b appear > click BACK > Slide 1 appear > click NEXT > Slide 2a appear, and so on...

I recall that in previous UPDATE versions, the random did happen even after I resume where I left off. But it is not happening now in UPDATE 6.

Is there a function to reset the common content slide in question bank like a RESET QUIZ button function in result slide would do?

Thanks and regards,

Emalyn

Hi Emalyn,

Correct - if you want to use the question bank, you'd have to choose tracking by a results slide, although you could set it to track by ensuring the user just visits a specific slide as described here.

In regards to the set up, I also tested the same behavior in SL2 and it worked the same way as I'm seeing now, so it may be that update 6 fixed an error in regards to how it was working. Based on this set up, I'm not sure what element of the randomness you're looking to use - but you may want to look at a thread such as this one that allows you to randomly generate a number.

Hi Ashley,

I kind of solved the random and tracking issue by applying variable to all slide and track using empty result slide as part of the last content slide. You may see the attached SL file.

But another problem pops out with bookmarking issue after uploaded to LMS website.

In storyline:

  • 1st try
  1. All slide animation restart each time learner access the pagebut the variable for tracking will reset if they re-access the slide
  2. If did not revisit slide, the variable will record as completed(‘true’ in the language of variable, cause I use true/false method)
  • 2nd try - Prompt resume to where last left off > Clicked NOT to resume> all variable will reset to unvisited state (variables = false), I can't re-access the result slide
  • 3rd try - Prompt resume to where last left off > Clicked to resume >variable for tracking will reset if they re-access the slide else the variablewill record as completed

Problem 1:

1st access - after I completed all slide and gotaccess to result slide, I go to any other slide and quit (example slide C)

2nd access – I clicked resume, it brings back toslide C (yes it’s correct), then I go to other slide (example slide G) and quit

3rd access – I clicked resume, problemlies here it brings me back to slide C not matter how many times I tryaccess and resume the courseware.

The above was cause by if tracking set to “Track result slide”

If tracking set to “Track number of slides viewed” then there isno issue in resume or not resume.

So conclusion:

  • Tracking by result slide
  1. Random and tracking incomplete/passed solve
  2. Problem is bookmarking in resume where learner left off based on Problem 1.
  • Tracking by number of slides viewed
  1. Bookmarking no issue
  2. Problem 2 is tracking incomplete/passed cannot be done if there is question bank in content and also it tracks by count of times slideview and not the total of slide I have there. (I have question bank for my exercise pages)
  •  Storyline has set the Not resume bookmarking to reset allvariables to false but at my report status remains passed. (Which is another Problem 3). How do I tell storyline to remain my variables is true even if I click Not to resume at LMS website?

Please help.

Thanks and regards,

Hi Emalyn,

Thanks for sharing the file here for us to take a look at.

For problem 1: It sounds like this may be working as designed in the sense that you've met the completion requirement, and therefore the course is in review mode - bringing the user back to where they met that requirement based on this article.   You can modify that behavior as described there, but it's unsupported.

For problem 2: We have reported it to our QA team, that when tracking by slides viewed and using a question bank, the completion status will appear earlier than it should based on the "slide draw" being counted as one slide - although you're able to select X of X slides and see the total number of slides. I don't have an update to share on that issue at this time, but I'll include this thread in the report filed with our QA team.

For problem 3: if you've choosen not to resume, than the variables would be reset and everything within the Storyline course itself would start anew. Your LMS may be saving the previous completion and/or score and depending on your LMS, once you reach the completion requirement again it would be reset there as well.

You may want to reach out to your LMS regarding some of these items, and if you have any additional questions please let us know.

Hi Ashley,

I will try out the problem 1 solution by changing the configuration file.

As for problem 3, I have some courseware made and publish by flash base and uploaded to the same LMS website for testing, but it works fine whereby  after I clicked NOT resume, it brings me back to page 1 and the tracking of each page's completion remains completed (in storyline sense, the variables stays true).

And I've notice that when I click NOT to resume, the state at menu refreshes to default state too instead of viewed.

Is there no solution for when I want it to be when user click NOT to resume where left off, brings to initial page 1 and variables stay true?

Thanks and regards,

Emalyn

Hi Emalyn,

In regards to your question about resuming - it sounds like your LMS is able to capture and hold some of this data and that may be how it's working with your other course? If you're choosing to not resume the course where you left off, Storyline is assuming you'd like a fresh start and therefore is not holding variables, state changes, or the state of the player menu.

I'll defer to the community on anything they've set up to achieve the functionality you're looking for.
