Questions about quizzes

Hello everyone!

I’m still learning and practicing this great Storyline tool and I have some questions about quizzes (hope you can answer them)

  • I want my learners to have a second try, so when they click on the “Try again” button all the elements of the quiz are “reset to zero” (their answers erased) so they can answer the question over again.  Is it possible? How can I do that?
  •  Is it possible to make a “fill in the blank” graded question with 4 answer boxes to complete in the same slide (for example: “Name the 4 Beatles”)? I tried to do so and didn’t manage…
  • And in the same way, I want to build a “Matching Drop Down” graded quiz wit,  as an example, 4 items and only 2 possible answers in the matching drop down (ex : items would be Kiwi, Tomato, Banana, Salad and the possible answers : fruit or vegetable). How can I do that?
  • And last but not least: I wanted my feed back texts to be white. I changed their color in the Results Slide Master but it didn’t change my slides. It’s working perfectly with the other colors (red for example).  Why ?

Thanks a lot for your answers,

Have a nice day (I hope you have a better weather than us, it’s freezing!)

Hi there Stéphanie!

  • This depends on the question type and what content you'd like to reset. For example, if you're using a drag and drop question, you could have the objects return to their initial placement or state when the "Try Again" button is clicked. Again, though, without knowing that type of question you're working with, it's difficult to give specific suggestions for this.
  • For the Matching Drop Down, you could have the first 4 items (kiwi, tomato, banana and salad), then provide the two responses (fruit or vegetable) as the answers. Now, the problem with this is that you're going to see the answers listed multiple times, if they're provided more than once. What you can do is separate the answers; for example "Kiwi and Banana" > Fruit, etc. What may be a better option is either a drag and drop, where the user could see an image of the fruit or veggie and drop it onto a category. Another option would be to create your own drop down menu and simulate the menu question, if you'd like to stay with that specific question type in your course.
  • I'm not entirely sure which feedback text you're referring to. Do you mean the text that shows up on the prompts? You may need to edit this in the Feedback Master, but it depends on how you have the course set up. Can you give a little more information, screenshots, or share the .STORY file here? If I can see it, maybe I can give more information about changing it.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks!

Christine

HiChristine

Thank youfor your answers.

  • For thefirst question, I manage with the multiple choice and multiple response but Idon’t see How I can reset the first location of my drag items when clicking on “Tryagain” button? Could you help ?
  • Thank youfor the link, I will read it with attention
  • For thelast question, I'm sending to you 3 screen captures. Why my “Correct layer” is thatdifferent of what I "designed"  in the Feedback Master ?

Thank you for your help !

Hi Stéphanie,

Not to sound like a broken record.. but it would be much easier if I could see the file you're working on. I'd probably be able to give you some step-by-step advice on how to do what you'd like to accomplish. If you'd like to share the file here, I would only need to see the .STORY file (it will be listed as an Articulate Storyline Story for the file type) and you can attach it here by using the paperclip icon in your response.

What type of Drag and Drop are you using? Are you using the normal Matching Drag and Drop that's built-in to Storyline, or have you created a free form Drag and Drop?

For the Correct feedback prompt you're seeing, how does it look when you preview the course? Do you see the white as it shows in that layer, or does it show the black that you've designed in the Master?

Hello Christine

Sorry forthe delay but I was on a business trip.

Thank youvery much for answering my newbie questions.

I send you my .story. Don’t look at the content and the look and feel, I’m just learning touse storyline and these are only practice exercises.

Questions about feedback Masters,

I tried 3 Feedback Masters (Clean, Storyline –whichis the default one- and Custom Design).
  • Let’s say we are in the scene “Quiz 1”and we’re on question 2 “Qui a écrit Imagine?”
  1. Iwant the question to remain when the feedback appears. Why can’t I see it in my“Clean” FeedBack Master? What do I have to do to make it appear again?
  2. Whyis the text in black instead of white, as described in my “Clean” Feedback master?

  • Let’s takeslide 1.3, the D&D :
  1.  Whyin the “correct layer” the word “Correct” is written too high (it’s perfectlyplaced in Storyline Master)?
  2.  Whyin the “incorrect layer” the word “Incorrect” is not in italic and white as itis the “Storyline Master”?
  3. In the same way, why is the correction in white(instead of black in the “Storyline Master”?

Questions about drag and drop  (the ones bydefault on Storyline) - slide 1.3

  • Whatshould I do to put all the “matching” boxes at their initial place again whenthe learner clicks on the “try again” button?
  • CanI change the look of the boxes? (I’m pretty sure I can but I didn’t find how)
  • CanI change the type of the exercise from that slide (eg : to multiple choice orother) or do I have to build a new slide (?

Thank youfor all these questions and thanks for the demo and tutorial that help me a lot

Have a niceday and hope to read you soon!

Welcome back, Stéphanie. I hope the business trip went well

  • Let’s say we are in the scene “Quiz 1”and we’re on question 2 “Qui a écrit Imagine?”
  1. I want the question to remain when the feedback appears. Why can’t I see it in my“Clean” FeedBack Master? What do I have to do to make it appear again?
  2. Why is the text in black instead of white, as described in my “Clean” Feedback master?

It looks like the background for this question's feedback layers on the Feedback Master have been modified. If the Feedback Master slide contains a solid background, you won't be able to see through it.

When looking at the background options (which can be seen by right-clicking on the slide background and selecting "Format Background"), it looks like the background was set to use "Solid Fill". Though it shows up white in the Feedback Master slide, it's blocking out the background of your question when the layers show.

I've changed this to "No Fill" so you can see the question, now.

For the text, this is showing up as black because the text on your feedback layer (through the slide layers, not the Feedback Master) are black. The white text you have assigned to the Feedback master is actually being covered by the content you have on the slide layer, because there's been an additional shape added to the slide that covers this up. Now, if you want to keep the custom red and green shapes, you'd just need to change the color of the text on the slide layers. If you want the design you set up on the Feedback Master, you'll want to remove the custom shapes/colors you added to the slide layers.

I've changed the black text on the Slide layers to white, for now.

  • Let’s take slide 1.3, the D&D :
  1.  Why in the “correct layer” the word “Correct” is written too high (it’s perfectly placed in Storyline Master)?
  2.  Why in the “incorrect layer” the word “Incorrect” is not in italic and white as it is the “Storyline Master”?
  3. In the same way, why is the correction in white(instead of black in the “Storyline Master”?

It looks like the word "Correct" may have been moved at some point in that layer. You should be able to click on it and move it down to the correct location.

I'm not sure what's going on with the Incorrect text. It doesn't seem to be pulling the formatting in. I tested this with another Feedback Master, but didn't see any change. For now, I've changed the color on the slide layer to white and italic.

I'm not sure what you mean in your last question here (3) - the text formatting on the slide layer is black for the description text and title.

All of these seem to be related - it seems like the content on the slide layers got modified, so it's not pulling properly from the Feedback Master.

Questions about drag and drop  (the ones by default on Storyline) - slide 1.3

  • What should I do to put all the “matching” boxes at their initial place again when the learner clicks on the “try again” button?
  • Can I change the look of the boxes? (I’m pretty sure I can but I didn't find how)
  • Can I change the type of the exercise from that slide (eg : to multiple choice or other) or do I have to build a new slide (?

If you'd like to customize the appearance and behavior of Drag and Drop items, it may be best to create a free form Drag and Drop, instead. If you're wanting them to return to their additional positions, you can certainly do this - but it may be a little more complicated. You can do this with states, and/or variables, conditions, etc.

You cannot change the question type once the question has been created, as far as I know.

HelloChristine

Greaaaat !Thank you for your quick and helpful answer!

Background,of course! (I can’t remember when I have it changed!)

I think Ihave a tip to put the all the “matching” boxes at their initial place againwhen the learner clicks on the “try again” button. I create 2 slides (A and B)with the same exercise. Slide A : 2 attempt, slide B : 1 attempt.

If thelearner make some mistake on slide A, I send him to slide B.

This shouldwork. I’ll try

Thank you again and have a nice day !
