Quiz Default Settings?

Jun 26, 2013

I have been tasked to create roughly 10, 40 question quizzes in storyline for one of my company's clients. We don't want feedback enabled or the answers shuffled which are the default settings. Presenter/Quizzmaker use to allow you to set your desired preferences in you question bank so you didn't have to manually set these two settings.

Currently this is a lot of needless extra clicking, and quite frankly it is extremely irritating that this function was either removed or hidden better than a leprechaun's gold. Google and looking through these forums did not yield hasty answers.

Did I miss something or is this function gone? I would really love to not have to spend additional time writing a script to do this myself or being forced to make ~800 extra clicks. Below is a screen shot of what I am referring to.

Welcome to E-Learning Heroes, Brian!

Sorry for the frustration! As far as I know, though, this hasn't been an option in Storyline. Presenter and Quizmaker have a different set of features, unfortunately and this is probably one of those that differs in Storyline.

Having said that, however, maybe there's a way we can save you some time. Are you using the same question types for your quiz questions? If you're going to have multiple questions of the same type, maybe you could create a duplicate of a question that's already set up the way you want it - without the shuffle or feedback enabled.

Or, what I like to do, is create a "Go To" question that's set up with design and feedback/scoring options. Then, instead of creating a new question each time I want to add one, I simply duplicate that question and add the content. When I've added all of my questions, I delete the "Go To" question or exclude it from the questions pulled into the quiz.

Just a couple suggestions I wanted to share! Hopefully this will make the process a little less tedious for you.

Also, if you'd like to see more options for questions and question banks in Storyline in a future release, you may want to consider sharing your feedback with our development team:

Good day,

Thank you for your earlier reply. The answer and the directions you provided were helpful to a certain extent. I still have a few more technical issues that I hope you can help with or point me in the right direction. I could not find an answer in the forums, or on your site. I have copied my colleague, who is our in-house expert on BisTrainer and will soon be developing in Articulate too. I also cc'd my manager to keep her in the loop.

So, hoping you can help, here is a more detailed explanation of my 'issues.'

1. I now realize that I have to set my defaults before adding more questions to the quiz. Is there a way to modify all the questions in a quiz to a new default after the fact? What about updating all the quizzes in a Presenter 360 presentation?
2. When I publish to my LMS, I can skip slides and go right to the quizzes (which is what I want for now). However, as soon as the learner completes/passes the last quiz, the LMS (BisTrainer) boots them out and marks the course as completed. Here are my settings.
* Reporting & Tracking Setting used:

i. SCORM: SCORM 2004 v.4

ii. Report Status as: Passed/Incomplete

iii. Tracking: Result slide to report: Quiz 4 (last quiz). If I set this to an earlier quiz, it will boot the learner out after that quiz is completed/passed.

* Properties of all Quizzes:

i. When User passes: Goes to next slide

ii. When user fails: Goes to next slide

iii. Allow user to leave quiz: At any time

iv. User may view slides after quiz: Any time

v. Show in menu as: Single item.

1. Is there a way to reset a Presenter 360 to all defaults settings, all at once? Is there a way to edit all the Presenter 360, including Quizmaker and Engage to a set of new default settings that I can use for all our courses and share with my colleague?
2. Once the testing is done, how do I reset the Slide Navigation to its original default settings of forcing the learner to navigate all slides in order, and completing quizzes before continuing? I do want the learner to be able to go back to an earlier slide to review material -like jump out of a quiz to an earlier slide for an answer and then return to the quiz.

I published to Scorm.com for testing, and all is fine there. It does not boot you out right after Quiz 4 is done. I have a few slides after that last quiz that I want the learner to see before exiting the LMS. Here is the link to the SCORM published course, this link will expire on Nov 1, 2018.

Here is the link to the Articulate Preview for this course.

Any help you can provide with this will be appreciated. I have a lot of courses waiting for this to be resolved before I can publish them.

Hello, Alain.  Thanks for being so detailed about your challenges!  Just a heads up: Replying via email includes your response in the discussion forum, where we also reply.  You’ll get an email notification of our reply, but we are actually replying in the discussion.  Your email signature is included too, in case you want to edit it out.

On to your questions!  It sounds like you’re asking about changing the quiz properties of all quizzes included in a project at once.  Because each quiz in the presentation is a distinct element, the properties must be changed for each one.

Tracking
When you publish a course, you can track by a single quiz result.  You’re tracking Quiz 4, and using passed/incomplete means that it should record "incomplete" until the user passes the last quiz.

While Presenter will send the completion information to your LMS at that point, it won’t ask your LMS to close the course.  Is there a setting in the LMS that you can change to not automatically close the course once completion is met?

Navigation
You can use your Player Properties window to restrict navigation in a course.  Click on the Menu tab and set your navigation there.  You’ll want to use “Restricted,” which will ensure learners view the entire timeline of each slide, in order.  Learners can revisit slides they’ve already seen at any time.

Do you want to make sure your learners pass all the quizzes?  Consider setting your quiz properties to “user may view slides after quiz:  after passing.”  This may be helpful for the last quiz especially, in case you can't change your LMS to stop closing the course after completion is met.

I hope that helps!  Let me know if I've missed anything.

2. During development, we have all the slides set to FREE navigation. Once the testing is done, how do I reset the Slide Navigation to its original default settings of forcing the learner to navigate all slides in order, and completing quizzes before continuing? Hi Alain,

1. You can change some slide properties in Presenter all at once, you'll see those options noted here.  There isn't a similar option for Engage or Quizmaker to return to the defaults or mass update a number of slides. Is there something specific you're hoping to accomplish that we could point you too?

2. Take a look at the options here for restricted navigation in Presenter.  You can also use the slide properties to lock (or unlock) specific slides.

Let us know if you need anything else!

Alain Gauthier

Locking a slide means learners can't advance by clicking the player controls or the slide titles in the menu. To navigate away from a locked slide, you'll need to provide one or more hyperlinks that jump to other slides in the course, or set the slide to advance automatically (see above). That is NOT an option. I don't have audio on the slide and have not set time for each slide.

Restricted: This means learners can view the current slide and any slide they previously viewed, but they can't jump ahead or skip over slides using the course menu. That would work for us, but I don't see that option or menu.
