Quiz published in Storyline not recording correctly in LMS

May 21, 2013

Hi there,

We've recently encountered a problem. We publish quizzes to our LMS and set the LMS to record the FIRST score the user records (although they can access the content unlimited times).

Previously, we published our quizzes in Quizmaker and everything was fine. However, since migrating to Storyline, we have noticed that the published content auto-saves every so often. This means that if a user is taking a test and the published content auto-saves after one minute (and they have yet to answer a question) then they are recording a score of 0% on our LMS - even though they go on to record a score of, say, 80%.

Has anyone else encountered this? I can't find an option within publish, to turn off this feature. It would be really interesting to hear others' experience of this.

Hi Alex,

I haven't encountered this that I know of, but to be fair I probably haven't paid close enough attention to know if our quizzes are behaving this way or not.  Are you using a Results slide with your quiz?  I believe that the results slide is set to submit the results for the quiz when the learner hits the results slide, so I'm a bit surprised to hear that it is doing some kind of auto save...

Hi Brian,

Thanks for your prompt response. Yes, we use a Results slide with the quiz and the resource is published to track progress using quiz result. Like I say, the only thing which has changed in terms of how we author and publish the quiz is the migration from Quizmaker to Storyline. I've seen on another board there have been issues with reporting progress when the user accesses using IE10. Do you think the two could be linked?

Hi there Alex,

I saw your earlier post in the Studio section and I just wanted to post over here, in case you missed it.

It doesn't sound like the same issue, honestly. Have you tested your course in SCORM Cloud? This would help us determine if the issue is Articulate related or if it's on your LMS's side. If you're using AICC content please take a look at the article below for testing information:

Articulate Support - Testing AICC content at SCORM Cloud

If it appears in SCORM Cloud as well, we'd be happy to take a closer look at what might be going on.

If you can't replicate the issue in SCORM Cloud, it's probably an issue that you'd want to take to your LMS team.

The articles here and here may also help clear up common LMS issues.

Let us know how it turns out.

Thanks Alex!

Hi Alex, Brian and Christine,

To jump in on the discussion (if I may), but I think this is a similar issue to one that I and a couple of other users have experienced as per this thread.

@Alex - are you using a Question Bank or multiple Question Banks to draw your questions into your quiz?

I too was finding that the users grade/score was resetting to 0 when resuming my project on the result slide and I was able to replicate this in SCORM Cloud. After raising a ticket with Support, their initial response is that this is happening because the questions in my final assessment are being drawn from 5 Question Banks (each contains 3 questions based on each learning objective).

As a test, I have taken 5 questions out of the QB's and placed them in my project as 'regular' question slides and sure enough, when I test this version in SCORM Cloud, the score remains when resuming on the result slide

Hi Antony,

Many thanks for your reply - that's really helpful.

Yes - I am using a Question Bank. The LMS vendor seems to think that the problem lies in the 'submit' button. Each question has a next, previous and submit button. I'm going to try and publish the same quiz without the submit button to see if that solves the issue.

I'll report back.

Thanks again,

Alex
