Quiz resets

Dec 02, 2013

I've searched for this topic here online, but everyone seems to have the opposite problem as mine.  If it has been answered, I apologize--I couldn't find anything that matched.

I have a quiz in my module with three buttons on the results page--review quiz, retry quiz, and return to the course (to review the content before retaking the quiz).  The client wants the learner to be able to only retake the quiz once, so I have set up a variable to count the number of retries and hides the button after they've retaken the quiz (works perfectly).

My problem is if they click the button to go back to the main content to review, when they go to the quiz again it has already reset. So it ends up that they can retake the quiz any number of times as long as they go back to the main content first rather than click the "Retry" button.  My "Review" and "Retry" buttons are the standard ones from the Results Slide options.  The "Reset results"  trigger is only activated by clicking the "Retry" button.  So by rights, if they go back to the quiz any other way, their previous choices should be there and they have to click "Next" to get back to the results page in order to select the "Retry" button.

On the individual quiz screens I have tried both "Automatically decide" and "Resume saved state" on revisits, but the result is the same.  It worked properly before the client changed their mind and wanted to let the learner retry the quiz and I added that button.

Any ideas?

I don't want to block access to the quiz, as there are some screens after the results page that they need to get to.  As it is now, if they go back to the main content, they HAVE to take the quiz again to get to those final screens.  It SHOULD show them their last responses and they just click "Next" through them to the results page.  At that point is when they decide to retake the quiz or move on to the end.

What I can't figure out is why the quiz is resetting just by going back to the main content?  The only trigger to reset the quiz is attached to the "Retry Quiz" button.  Most of the postings here on the subject are trying to get the opposite to occur.  They WANT to get the quiz to reset but it isn't.

Have attached a demo that will hopefully be of some help.  Could only spend a few mins putting it together so can't be sure it does exactly what you're looking for.  Basically learners can attempt the quiz twice, either via Retry (once) or going through from main content.  Final (post-results) slide is only available if the learner passes with 60%+, ie 2 correct answers.

Let me know ...

Thanks Simon for the example file. Your project didn't quite replicate what I was trying to accomplish, but I was able to modify it to confirm what I was trying to do.  So I knew it was possible.  Which made me wonder all the more why my original file wasn't working right.  I FINALLY found what the problem was.  I had copied a button from my results page when I created the quiz intro page (a backwards workflow, I know, but that's another story).  I changed the text on the button but didn't realize that the triggers copied also.  So when I would start the quiz, it would reset the results and increment my counter. I was focusing on the triggers on the results page when the problem was on the quiz intro page.

But your example opened up a whole new idea--that of skipping the quiz if they had already taken it and letting them decide from the results page to retake it or not (it's not a pass/fail situation--the score is only for their information).  I think it's a much better flow than what I had originally planned.

Thanks for your help!
