Quizzing/Variables within Role Playing Branched Scenario

Feb 08, 2013

Hello Heroes,

I'm developing my first Storyline project and I need your help! It is a three scene, role-playing game in which players will be presented with challenge questions in addition to two Choose Your Own path options. Players earn points based on the answer to their challenge questions and depending on how they respond to the Choose Your Own path options they will either remain on their current path or move on to the next more complex path. Each path is a scene and I need to calculate player scores earned on challenge questions from one or multiple scenes. Once a player is on a more complex path they will not be able to jump back to a previous path - forward movement only.

Challenge questions are designed primarly around hotspots with one or two exceptions. One hotspot question could potentially have two correct answers which is a limitation in the quizzing slide I'm currently using. (I simply designed around it by covering up the other possible answer on the screenshot for the time being). After digging around the tutorials and posts it appears I should be using variables, but I'm unclear on how to make this function work in this project. I'm familiar with the technical steps to program variables, but I'm not sure how to program them for this project.

As stated earlier, I'm currently using quizzing slides for the challenge questions, however when I publish and test I do not get a score, regardless of the point values assigned to each answer and the fact that I linked the questions to the result slide. Additionally, I need the score to be a whole number, not a percentage, and reporting the score to the ELM is not a requirement as I am only looking for Complete/Incomplete. So, considering all of this, here are the questions that come to mind:

  • Do I combine variables with my existing quizzing slides or do I abandon the quizzing slides and build the challenge questions on blank slides using only variables?
  • Assuming I need one result slide for each path/scene, how do I get Storyline to calculate the scores using variables and quizzing or only variables?

Thank you!

Hi Meredith,

You could build it entirely with variables doing the calculations to control progress, show a user their score, etc.  However, Storyline doesn't currently have the ability to "write" to the system variables that would be reported to an LMS.

If I understand your setup correctly, I'm wondering if you could build the entire thing with variables, and then right at the end, have a single quizzing slide that's "disguised" as a completion screen.  You could use the variables to set a pick one question similar to how Jeanette describes here: https://player.vimeo.com/video/145578775.

Submitting this at the end would then give you your complete/incomplete data.

Welcome to E-Learning Heroes, Meredith!

Sounds like an exciting (and ambitious!) project. Do you have any storyboards or sketches laid out around what you're trying to do? I hesitate to offering too much detail before getting a little better idea of what you're after.

I think a lot of what you're talking about is totally possible using built-in functionality, but I'd like to get a visual picture of what the project looks like.
