Random and questions bank always the same ???

Oct 04, 2017

Hello

I created a question bank with 22 questions.

I chosed to ask only one 3 questions randomized, but the most of time it's always the same. Could you explain me the problem.

If a go back to an another slide with the same question bank I got always the same questions too. I don't understand.

I put the option to RESUME for all question at new visit and it seems doesn't work

Thanks for your answer

Sorry that's happening, Stéph@ne! We've seen some problems in Storyline where a question draw slide always shows the same questions when the slide is revisited, and it sounds like that's what's happening in your file, too.

What version of Storyline are you using? Would you mind if I took a peek at your file to see if it's related to the bug I mentioned?

Here a test with only one SCENE, my project have 40 scenes

I removed all slides for the test except scene 28, but I don't know why the project
is alway heavy 120mb.
So to try this, click on the first slide to see a randomised question, if you have a correct
answer you can play the dice instead of you have a penalty and you try again after 10 seconds, if you get the number 1 you win and you can't see the problem.
If you have another number you stay in the same place , and you try answer to another
question. And this is the problem, because this is always the same question ???

And the same dice results for the dice.

Thanks

Hi Stéph@ne,

Unfortunately your link didn't work for me, but from what you described, it sounds like you are running into the bug I mentioned earlier.

In our tests, we've found that this bug only happens in the HTML5 output. That's when the link to the course ends in story_html5.html.

Instead, try viewing the course in a Flash-enabled browser, and the quiz should work better. You'll know you're viewing Flash if the link ends in story.html.

Hello Alyssa

Thank's for your answer.
To download my file click the right mouse button and download the link file.
Unfortunately I tried Flash browser only for all tests and it doesn't work.
I usually run story.swf in a flash debugger (see attachment)
Or you can try this http://www.oav-prevoyance.fr/story.html
And as you see the problem doesn't come from HTML5.

Hi Stéphane.

The best approach to fix this bug is to create your own random question bank. By that, I mean use javascript to generate a random number, then use a Storyline trigger to send the user to a question slide based on that random number.

Unfortunately the bug you are encountering has been around since at least SL2, and it is something that has still yet to be fixed.

Hi Stephanie,

I'm sorry this is causing such a headache for you, and I'd like to have a look at your file to see if there's anything we can do to work around this bug.

I'm not able to download your file using the link you shared previously. Can you please click here to open the thread, then use the Add Attachment button to attach the original (unpublished) file in a new comment? Thanks, and I'll be standing by!

Thanks for sharing your file with me, Stephane! I published it and viewed the Flash output on Tempshare. I didn't see any questions repeating in Flash, but I did notice it happen in HTML5. You can test it by opening this link in a Flash-enabled browser. You'll want to be sure the end of the URL says story.html.

Beyond using the Flash output, you may want to consider removing the questions from the bank and inserting them into the scene itself.

This bug happens in Storyline 2, 3, and 360, and our team is looking for a solution. I'm really sorry this is causing a hassle for you, and I'll let you know as soon as I get any updates on it.

Hi,

I have the same issue with question banks where they don't randomise for a second visit.
It seems so strange that a fix hasn't been found for this as I have seen posts about the issue going back as far as 5 years!.

It's clear that question bank randomisation is done when the course is launched, not when a question bank is accessed which would make more sense and surely is an easy fix.

With it being Storyline 2 I don't expect they fix this issue and I am reluctant to upgrade to the expensive subscription model for Storyline 3, especially as issues like this might not even be fixed in that version.

There are so many frustrating issues like this with storyline that are well documented and called out on these forums yet fixes very rarely come for large key functionality issues like this one.

....Disgruntled!

Hi Lee and Stephane,

I'm really sorry this bug has caused so much frustration, for both you and your learners. Our team is looking into it, monitoring impact, and prioritizing the problem. I commit to keeping you in the loop of any new information I receive on all versions of Storyline.

I wanted to share a sample Storyline 360 file with a question bank set-up, so you can see how the bug behaves in that version of Storyline. It'll be the same for Storyline 3.

You'll notice that you get a different question draw each time you visit the question bank for the first 3 or 4 draws. With subsequent draws, you'll see the same question again and again.

Click here to test the sample file.

Stephane, I did take a look at your Flash output link, and I did see the problem happen there, as well. I'll be sure to include your link in our bug documentation--the more samples we have, the better.

I did want to also mention that it looks like the course was created with Storyline 2 Update 7, is that correct? If so, I'd encourage you to download the latest update of Storyline 2 (Update 12) to take advantage of the fixes we've made in the last year.

Lee, our team would be happy to take a closer look at your file to see if there's anything we can do to help you work around the issue. If you don't mind sharing it, you can send it to us by clicking here.

I see that you have 2 random (draw a question) pages, one that chooses a question and one that chooses a die roll. Each is set to draw only once (i.e. include 1 question) from the pool. And then you are just revisiting those same two "draw" pages over and over.

I think that is the root of the issue. When you go back to the page, it has already picked its one item from the pool, so the draw is kind of locked in.

If I have time, I might take a go at changing the logic, but I think that is where you will solve this problem.

I hope my explanation made sense.
