Re-Publishing Storyline

Mar 18, 2013

When you change, save, and re-publish the same storyline file does it save the output to a different filename each time and only updates the changes files? I recently changed the flash setting to be managed by the course and when I re-publish the course it does not appear to be creating a different output folder that contains the revisions. When we move the folder to the LMS production location it does not puckup the changes. Yet, if I rename the course title and publish it, a new output folder appears to be created and it tests correctly in the TEST area of the LMS. Can someone help me understand how re-publishing the same course works and where the revised output files are stored? Thank you.

Hi Patrick. Welcome to E-Learning Heroes!

When you save the course and republish the files, it should overwrite the previous content in that course. If you change the directory or the name, if may create new files.

If your files aren't updating when you publish again, try to make sure the project files are located on your local hard drive.

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names.

Additional information regarding "Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces" in Windows operating systems can be found in the following Microsoft article.

If the content isn't updating on your LMS after uploading, try clearing your browser cache and see if you're able to view the new content when refreshing the course.

Sam: Storyline will delete all files in the destination folder for publish and then re-publish all files.

I recently changed the flash setting to be managed by the course and when I re-publish the course it does not appear to be creating a different output folder that contains the revisions.

Sam: It won't create a new output folder unless you change either: (1) The published Title in the publish dialog box, or (2) the Folder location in the publish dialog box.

When we move the folder to the LMS production location it does not puckup the changes.

Sam: It is common that when replacing files on an external server with identically named files, the old files are often cached and the revisions will not play.  Most LMS get around this by creating a random pathname so that new revisions are always seen as unique.  Sounds like your LMS doesn't do this.

Yet, if I rename the course title and publish it, a new output folder appears to be created and it tests correctly in the TEST area of the LMS.Sam: Yes.  Sounds like you have caching of old files somewhere and you must manually create a new pathname as the LMS does not.  This is not unusual, just be aware of this when publishing new content on your LMS.
