Hi Emilie and welcome to Heroes!

I may not be understanding your question - but if Storyline opens in a "read only" mode, you'll want to save it to your hard drive and then open that version to make any updates or edits. That message may also appear if the file is open in another instance of Storyline.

it's also worth checking that you're following some basic rules to prevent strange behavior:

Hi Ashley,

You know that Articulate Storyline read only mode do not exist, but you can add this mode with Windows.

With Windows, if you click on the right mouse button and you go on the properties, you can add the read only mode.

When a other user will open the file a message will fallow : you must save as the file to continue.

So, if my collegue wants to open the file at the same time of me, she will be forced to save the file and she could not delete the work that I did.

I just want know, if some people use this mode, and if you have had any bugs.

Thanks.

Hi Emilie,

How are you sharing the file with your colleague? We recommend working on .story files locally - as working off a network drive or shared drive could cause unusual behavior. You'll want to follow the workflow here for collaborating on files with a colleague to prevent odd behavior and ensure changes are overwritten.

It is not possible to open *.story file for a view if it has 'Read-only' attribute set (see readonly.png in attachment).
When you try to open such a file in Storyline 2 you get request to make it writable (see readonly2.png in attachment). If you choose 'No', nothing opens at all. From my point of view it is bug because 'Read-only' attribute is set to make files non-writable, but readable.
The use-case is when I open file locally just to check how this or that thing was made I may accidentally move/remove/edit/whatever do something there. Read-only attribute will protect my files from accidental editing.

HI Ivan,

If you choose yes, it should open the file and allow you to proceed normally. I haven't had any difficulty with accessing files that way, but please let us know if you experience any odd behavior.

Are you trying to trick me or what? File must be opened for reading in read-only mode. Not writable.

Hi Ivan,

I promise no trickery - I just meant that I am able to access the Storyline course/file by clicking yes. I guess I didn't clarify that Storyline doesn't have a read only option - perhaps if you're worried that someone may change your file, you could look at sending them a Publish to Word output to review?

Hi Ashley,

Well, I am not worried that someone may change my files, but I am concerned about final result of my own work. And I need it to be a StoryLine project so as I can peek at a combination of elements or elegant triggers in my old projects. Therefore, "Publish to a Word" is not a solution. The only solution I see is to make protected archives/backup copies. Or click "Don't save" upon exit, which may result in habit to click it always including files that I was editing. It is just annoying.

Person who actively use StoryLine have to remember all files he/she can/cannot edit. Things get worse in case of collaboration with several persons, who working on the same project with dozens of StoryLine files.

Why do you force your customers to take additional efforts when they just want to read a StoryLine file? May be I missed something. Please name bottleneck or reason why read-mode cannot be implemented in StoryLine. This is default functionality available in text/graphics/audio/video editors and other applications. And I bet it is possible to implement such a functionality in StoryLine too.

Would you be so kind to discuss read-only mode with your colleagues?

Thank you for your help.

Hi Ivan,

I haven't seen a lot of discussion of read-only mode in Storyline or heard a lot about it from our team, but I am happy to share your thoughts here with our product development team as a feature request or you can always submit feature requests here.

As for the why, I'm not on our development team, so I can't speak to that - but perhaps you may want to look at creating a duplicate copy of your .story files and name those as  "read only" so that you remember to open that one if you need to see what was done or where things stand now and feel secure in not making changes to them.
