Rebuilding Course

Jan 06, 2021

I am working with an organization that unfortunately does not have the source file for a module they want to edit. They have the SCORM package loaded to their LMS and are wondering if we can first get the SCORM from the LMS and second, would that help expedite rebuilding the course? I've sent a request to the LMS contact to find out about getting the SCORM, but now I'm not even sure if having it would help in rebuilding the course. Any thoughts/experiences with a situation like this? Thanks!

Hi Danielle,

No, you can't rebuild a course from the SCORM package. It may be difficult to even get the SCORM package out of the LMS, as many LMSs don't have any way to export the SCORM file once it it uploaded.

What I would do, if you can get the original zipped file, open the file and see if you can get the course to run. If so, run the file, and record it as you go through the package. You may have to do this a couple of times so you can get both positive and negative feed back for any quiz slides. Once you have the entire package recorded, you can save that as a video, or as a series of screen shots that you can use as a reference to rebuild the module. To record the module, I would recommend anything that can do a screen recording. Snag-it and Camtasia both work really well for that. You might be able to use Peek 360 to do it as well.

Thanks, Dave. I did hear back from our LMS and discovered, as you noted, you can't get the file back once uploaded. Unfortunately the client doesn't have the source file or SCORM - the only place it currently exists is in the LMS. So, rebuilding is looking to be the only option. Thankfully it's a short module! Thanks again for your reply!
