Recognising a double-click

I am putting together a very simple computer literacy quiz, and one of the tasks for the learner is to single-, double-, and right-click on an image.
I want to display a layer that corresponds to the type of click they make. The problem is that the double-click response layer never displays, because as soon as the user does the first click in the double-click, the single-click response layer appears.
Any advice on distinguishing between single and double clicks on the same object/hotspot?

Hi Andrew
I have attached a quick sample file
The 3 mouse click types activate 3 different layers with 3 triggers
Maybe this will help.
Thanks - it works, but not if I disable clicking on the base layer from each of the activated layers - as soon as I single click, the single click layer opens, and because I have disabled clicking on the base layer, the double-click isn't recognised. I found a workaround - thanks everyone who responded
