Recording an Application Installation

May 09, 2017

Has anyone else tried to use Storyline to record the steps of an application installation?

On my first attempt, it captured the launch of the .exe but nothing after that. I thought that it might have to do with Windows User Account Control, so I deactivated it. No luck.

What's also interesting is that after the application is installed, when I launch it from the desktop shortcut, the window it launches in is also not captured. I have a feeling it is related to the application itself but I wanted to see if anyone else had run into anything similar and if they had come across any workarounds.

Hi Matt,

Have you checked to see if both the application you're recording and Storyline are running with the same security permissions?  I've seen that cause odd recording things before - so that's a good first step!

To check Storyline:

  1. Navigate to the following folder, depending on your version of Microsoft Windows:
    • 32-bit: C:\Program Files\Articulate\Articulate Storyline
    • 64-bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\Articulate\Articulate Storyline
  2. Right-click Storyline.exe, and choose Properties.
  3. Select the Compatibility tab.
  4. If the box is marked to Run this program as an administrator, make sure the same box is marked for the application you're recording. If it's unchecked, make sure it's also unchecked for the application you're recording.

Let me know if that helps - or what application you're trying to record so that I can offer some other ideas!

Ashley-

Thanks for the reply. The application in question is one that my company developed. It appears they did not enable it expose itself in such a way that it can get picked up. I can make a movie, just not a simulation.

Not a huge deal on my end, just wanted to see if anyone had any other possible workarounds.
