Reducing SL2 File Size

Jun 24, 2015

Hello,

In a program similar to SL2, I was able to reduce file size by opening a list of all elements within the file and deleting elements that were no longer being used.  This, ultimately, reduced the file size and made opening/saving/sending, etc., quicker.

I can find no such feature in SL2.  Is it somewhere I haven't looked?

As a test, I took a file that was 43Mb.  Deleted every slide but 1.  Saved it, reopened it, and the file size reduced by a miniscule .5 Mb.  Something is awry.

Help very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Les,

Some things that could be still included in your file which are expanding the file size are slide masters or screen recordings that are not in use, so you may want to look at removing those. Also, when you delete the elements and save Storyline, if you're still looking at the file size of that project while having Storyline open the file size will not change as those items are still accessible with the "undo" button.

Hi Les,

Certainly understandable - and if you're able to share privately, I can take a look at it if you'd like to share here.

I'd also suggest looking to confirm that you're working on local project files as described here and then if you're seeing this issue regularly I'd go through the repair of Storyline here.

Les,

I've had projects in the 500MB range, where I then removed all the media since it was embedded in iframes. I had to do a "save as" in SL three times in a row, to different file names, to finally have all of that media removed from my .story file. Try that.

Odd that SL doesn't clean up the removed media itself. Maybe it's saved as part of an "undo" cache?

Thanks,

Mike
