References Making My Font Size Change
Nov 06, 2014
Hi!
I am using a text reference in my course and in every instance of its use in the course is making the text in the same text box shrink. I have tried a million things including making the text box bigger. After troubleshooting, I do know that it is the reference that is making this happen (i.e. the font does not shrink when I take the reference out of the text box). Has anyone ran into this same issue? Is it a bug in Storyline? Is there a workaround? I have included a couple screenshots so that you can see exactly what is happening.
Thanks in advance,
Alice May

Hi Alice May,
Thanks for sharing those images here. Are you able to share a copy of your .story file as well so that we could take a look at the text box settings?
Also, you'll want to ensure you're working locally as described here. You may also want to try importing the project into a new Storyline file following these directions.
Hey Ashley,
Here is the cut down version of my .story file. You will see the slide where the user inputs their text reference and then the main slide of concern. The "Introduction" layer is the where the textbox with the reference is. Also, I have been working locally (our shared server is ridiculously slow :)) I will try importing the project into a new storyline file as you suggested.

Hi Alice May, were you able to solve the issue? I have a similar problem with text resizing automatically (even with text autofit disabled). Very puzzling... Any news?
Hi Frank!
This thread is a bit dated and I do not have any information regarding Alice's post above, but did want to share this information as we are aware of some variances:
When you include variable references in text elements, you may find that the font applied to the variable reference doesn't display as expected in HTML5 output or the Articulate Mobile Player app. See this article for more information.
Hi Leslie, thanks for the quick reply.
I am familiar with the issue regarding variables and fonts. That's why I decided to use Arial and that works just fine. However, the problem now is the font SIZE that is changing uncontrollably (despite the fact that text autofit or shrinking are definitely disabled). Any Info on that? I've searched for postings on this issue around the community but wasn't able to find too much...
Do you have a file that I could take a look at Frank?
Here you go! You will see that all text fields where references appear are set to Arial size 18. When playing the story however, I get completely different sizes wherever there is a reference.
Thanks for sharing Frank! I was able to learn something in this process :)
So, this issue you're having is due to the multiple lines + variable reference.
Our QA Team stated:
We do not grow the text box on the second slide dynamically to fit the variable text in the runtime. If you want to be able to show multiple lines without shrinking then you will need to size the textbox accordingly.
I am adding this thread for awareness, but when I selected 'Resize shape to fit text', it works as intended.
Hi Frank,
In addition to what Leslie mentioned I wanted to share the link here to how the text will shrink to fit when the variable reference is used. The text boxes don't update dynamically so you'll want to confirm that it's as large as possible to accommodate the potential text. For example, the last reference box I saw it change size when entering my name, but when expanding the overall size of the text box it worked normally.
Lesley, Ashley, thanks so much for your support. It was really helpful!
Leslie/Ashley, I'm having the same issue and wonder if there is some other solution...ugh. Has it been fixed is 360? THANKS
Hi Sylvia!
Your text is changing size as well? Did you adjust the size of the textbox to fit the largest possible answer and change the settings on that textbox to 'Do not Autofit'?
If you need us to take a look at something, we certainly can. Are you using SL360 currently?
I found a similiar issue, when i insert a variable reference on a paragraph the text shrink. I found that the issue was that I animate the text box BY PARAGRAPH, the problem solved changing the animation and selecting animate AS ONE OBJECT
Thanks for popping in to share your findings and experience Carlos.
Welcome to E-Learning Heroes as well :)
