References showing in published version

Jun 13, 2021

I've created a quiz in Storyline 360 and have used triggers with conditions to make sure that if the learner changes their mind about which box to check, the state of the first chosen box returns to normal when they check another box.

While that part works perfectly well, I've now got what I assume are references in each box which shows when the Storyline project is published.

I'm sure there's a perfectly obvious answer, but it escapes me!

I've attached the partially finished project.

This is the text that you are seeing on the buttons:

It is the text that is part of the buttons. Select a darker button, and you can clearly see it in the states panel. What happened is that you were doing some other activity, and the text got copied to your clipboard. Then (I suspect) you created a button and tried to duplicate it, accidentally pressing CTRL-V before pressing CTRL-C. Pasting to a newly created object will copy the clipboard to the object's text. (Just a FYI, CTRL-D (Duplicate) is a much more reliable method of duplicating objects than Copy and  Paste.)  The %appdata% etc. means something different to the operating system than it does to SL, which is why SL can't make sense of it.

You can right click a button, choose edit text, highlight it, and delete the text. or you can highlight all the text in the object and delete it. Sometimes that can be be tricky so I would suggest it will be easier if you increase your zoom to 300 or 400%.

You say the other part is working perfectly, but there is at least a chance it won't always, because of this trigger:

The built-in superpower of objects with a Selected State is that they change to Selected state when clicked, and back to Normal when clicked a second time. If you create a trigger that duplicates that action, it has been known to conflict with the built-in action, causing some spectacular, but seldom useful results. I know you'll be happier if you delete it.

For future reference, there is a built-in superpower that is a very simple replacement for all your other triggers. It's Button sets.

Highlight all four buttons for a question, and right-click. From the pop-up menu, choose Button Set. The superpower of button sets is that if one of them is clicked, it turns to Selected State, and all the others in the set turn to Normal state.

I don't know what your workflow looks like, but if I were to work on this project, I think this would be the fastest way. For me, clearing one set of buttons of their text, and duplicating them would be much faster than clearing text one button at a time. I think deleting the triggers will make the system much more responsive when selecting a button.

1. Erase all the buttons, except for the buttons for Q1.

2. Since that would erase most of the triggers, I would erase the rest of them (that will probably increase the responsiveness of working with the page. When you select an object, it doesn't have to search through the triggers to highlight the ones connected with that object.

3. Delete the text on the four remaining buttons, along with their Visited state.

4. Select the four buttons, and duplicate them. Drag the new set of buttons to their correct location. Repeat until all questions have buttons.

5. Select the buttons for Q1, and make them a Button Set. Repeat for all questions. Be sure to give each set a unique name.  Note that you can't make the buttons a set before you duplicate them. That will make them all one giant set, and on the entire page only one can be selected.

I also noticed that the buttons for Q2 are doubled.

I'm curious, what is the significance of the chain graphic?

Any questions, come back and ask.

You are just amazing!  Thank you so much for such a clear and comprehensive answer.  And truckloads of thanks for the Button superpower tip.  The problem always seems to be that I'm too busy authoring Modules to invest the time to learn the tools properly - and there is so much to learn!!!  But with the generosity of people like you, we can all improve.
Re the chains significance - the ties that bind you to your role and organisation.  High score feedback says you're rusted on...

You're my hero!
