While searching for information on how to rename my screen recordings, I found a post dated July 2012 advising this was not available but to put in a feature request.
Q1 Does anyone know if this facility is available yet, or being considered by Articulate? I have a bundle of screen recordings that are not easy to identify what screen they relate to.
Q2 Does anyone know if it is possible to insert a screen shot straight into a Slide? At the moment I have to create a new scene and then copy/paste it into my slide.

Not entirely sure what you mean by inserting a screen shot straight into a slide, but figured I'd at least take a shot. Are you aware of the Screenshot button? Insert tab, Illustrations Group, Screenshot....just in case it's what you're looking for.
Are you referring to screen recordings that have already been inserted into the file/resources of the course? If so, I'm afraid that's not possible at the moment. You can name the recording when you first insert in into your project, but after it's been saved and inserted, I don't believe the name can be modified.
I totally understand how renaming would help with organizing and recalling recordings. Perhaps you could create new recordings of the originals and assign new names to them. This is, of course, assuming you don't already have too many to work with. Just a thought that may help you with identifying different recordings :)
