There isn't a way to renumber the scene or slides, although it seems you've read through the other threads and ideas in regards to ways around this. The numbers don't have to be displayed as a part of the menu though and therefore can only appear for you as the author in Story view. I know other users have also submitted their thoughts in the form of a feature request.

You can change the starting scene and if you want to renumber scenes you will need to cut and paste into the position you want them ordered.

Thanks but this doesn't help. I have now gone and looked at other similar discussions and see it is an ongoing issue with work arounds.
