Reporting Variables to LMS

Apr 08, 2019

I'm working on a course where students will be submitting a lot of inputs and I need a report of everything selected even though it's not set up like a quiz. I looked at this tutorial: https://articulate.com/support/article/reporting-storyline-variables-to-an-lms  but I find it very confusing and would love it if someone would dumb it down for me. I have the following questions:

  1. When they say we can hide these slides later, what does that mean?
  2. If the triggers are activated by the timeline, how will they work if these slides are hidden from the user?
  3. If they mean you just cover up the question slide with how you want it to look, isn't this the same as just doing a normal survey question?
  4. The LMS I use is Blackboard, where do I find the variables once students have submitted?

I want a way to gather the data on what students clicked even though these interactions aren't quizzes but rather individual inputs like meds they would prescribe and charting notes. See below:

Thank you,

Marilyn Mejia

Hi Marilyn! Thanks for reaching out! First, I wanted to link an updated version of that article here, since the one you're referencing is for an older version of Storyline.

I'm happy to help with questions 1-3, and other Blackboard LMS users in the community can help with question 4. Let's dive in!

  1. When they say we can hide these slides later, what does that mean?

Step 3 in the tutorial says, "edit the default Submit interaction trigger so it executes when the timeline of the slide starts." This will cause the slide to immediately jump to the next slide. It will flash on the screen for a split second, then it will move to the next slide in the list.
  2. If the triggers are activated by the timeline, how will they work if these slides are hidden from the user?

Submitting the interaction when the timeline starts should technically hide the slide from the user. However, the slide will briefly flash on screen before moving to the next slide. Our team is looking into this bug, and I'll send you an update if I hear more.
  3. If they mean you just cover up the question slide with how you want it to look, isn't this the same as just doing a normal survey question?

You won't be covering the question slide. However, you may want to drag all slide objects off-screen. This way, when the slide flashes briefly, the learner will see a blank, white slide.

Now, shoutout to Blackboard users in the community! Can you help Marilyn with her last question?

4. The LMS I use is Blackboard, where do I find the variables once students have submitted?
