reset question slide on variable

Jul 25, 2016

I'm using a single question slide (no review slide) within my SL course. If the answer is incorrect, I am sending the user back to review some slides and then return to the question. At this point, I would like the slide to reset (no answers selected) so they can try again. However, I do NOT want to reset the slide if the user gets the answer correct the first time. If they happen to return, they should still see their correct answers. I do have a variable that tells me if the user got the question incorrect the first time, but I don't see a way to use that for resetting the question slide. Any thoughts?

Hi, Heidi -- Thanks so much for reaching out here! Do you happen to have a file started that you would be able to share so that your fellow community members can take a look and share some ideas? And in case you were not already aware, I wanted to share that our Building Better Courses forum over here would be a great place to reach out for recommendations, as well.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, I have not yet had the time to pull out several slides to share a file with you. The original course is fairly large, so if I need to share a file, I would prefer to just pull a few examples. I was hoping I could get some ideas without resorting to that step.

Hi, Heidi -- Thanks for your reply, and can you share a bit more about what type of question format you intend to use? Hopefully some of your fellow community members will stop in with suggestions shortly!

I also wanted to note in case you were not aware, when you reply to a forum notification via email, the details in your signature are displayed publicly in the post. If you would like to remove that info, you are welcome to use the EDIT button below your reply here in the discussion itself.

I'm using a Matching Dropdown question. If the answer is Correct, the course continues (although a user could go back using Previous button or course Menu). In that case, they should be able to still see their answers.

If the answer is Incorrect, a Continue button on the Incorrect layer, has a trigger to jump to a previous slide and another trigger to set a T/F variable to True. After reviewing about 5 slides, the user is taken (via the variable) back to the question slide. This time, I would like the slide to be reset so they can try again.

Hi Heidi,

This is going to be a tricky one to accomplish, as the slide's revisiting property is for the whole slide and isn't based just on how they answered. Perhaps instead of jumping to another slide entirely, if they answer it incorrectly you could have them see the content in a lightbox slide? That way it sits on top of your question slide and when they're done reviewing they can choose to close the lightbox and reanswer the question.

I think the problem is that they need to review a number of different slides, but I can ask the reviewer if that will work. I'll have to play around with using a lightbox in that situation. I'm not all that familiar with lightboxes; just used them a couple of times.

I thought I had seen that someone had submitted a feature request a year or so ago regarding manually resetting question slides based on variables. I guess that has not been released.

Hi Heidi,

I'm not sure I've seen that feature request - but we see a number of different ones, and not all features are included in updates or new releases, and unfortunately we don't share a product roadmap or timeline in regards to when or what is included. You are welcome to share your thoughts on features here as well and submitting that to our Product development team.
