Reset to initial state

Can anyone help
I have designed two slides of calculations.
The first adds 4 numbers and records the answer in a fifth text box using the
%addtotal%. When the user moves on to the next page the exercise is repeated. I have set the slide properties to 'reset to initial state' when the user leaves but two things happen.
1. when in the next page the result of %addtotal% is carried forward (despite using a new text box albeit with %addtotal% command repeated)
2. when the user navigates to other pages but returns later, the result of %addtotal% is still shown despite the 'reset to initial state'
Any ideas?

Variables are not slide objects. This allows them to maintain their contents from slide to slide. This ability to persist is one of the characteristics which makes them very attractive and useful.
If you need them blank every time a slide starts, create a trigger to set them to blank when the timeline starts.
Thanks walt. Sorted!
