Resistance is Futile

May 07, 2015

Have been using Articulate for many years now and now the department is switching to Lectora. Now, I won't go into my personal feelings about Lectora, but let's just say I am not a fan and haven't been since the old days. It still fares far and away when compared to Articulate. But the Department Lead is sold on Lectora (saber of his old days) and refuses to be open to the discussion. I am interested in hearing others' stories of this situation and hopefully what success was had in converting the Boss to a better way. Now, I am experienced in all three versus (Captivate, Lectora and Articulate) of eLearning products and in 25 yrs of experience, well aware of personal choice and in the premise that sometimes you just have to make the switch. But I honestly believe that Articulate would be an improvement, not only to the development of better eLearning end products, but to their hightened level of productivity (i.e., last year I built 37 modules using Articulate - since Feb. I have just finished my first using Lectora, and with fewer features than the ones before). What suggestions are out there for convincing someone with [only] Lectora experience for staying with Articulate. Thoughts anyone?

Hi Bruce

could you build a sample course in both and do a comparison chart for him with the stats of how long it took to build (the productivity card).  Then run both the courses past a few users to get their feedback (user experience card) . Maybe get him to do both courses and see why he thinks Lectora is the best choice.

Hey Bruce -

That's a tough one. I have a love / hate relationship with most authoring tools. Lectora among them. There are some really great features but between the added expense of the Inspire package and the lack of a synchronized timeline are big downsides for me. But there are also some really clever capabilities in the package.

You might try putting together a matrix of the advantages and disadvantages of each tool. At the very least, this could help you find some things to like about Lectora if you're not able to make the case for an alternative.

Hi Wendy,

We already have a hundred or so modules developed with Articulate, Captivate and now a few with Lectora, but the boss is so closed minded ot any input from others that it seems like a dictatorship - not even interested in user feedback. We are now having to dumb-down our modules and eliminate the interactivity because this is how he feels learning should be presented. Welcome to the old PowerPoint days.

Thanks for your input

Thanks for the input, Steve. Unfortunately he listens to the input of two other developers, and the remaining members of hte team just listen to their discussions, which mostly consist of workarounds for problems or issues that Lectora has. If these weekly discussions, and feedback from higher-ups about slowed production don't strike a note in him... a matrix isn't going to help.
