Resize player width when left nav/menu hidden, i.e. during quiz

Sep 22, 2014

I have spent all day trying to solve this challenge so I hope one of you articulate storyline gurus can give me some guidance. I have a left nav/menu in my course which becomes hidden during the quiz at the end and when the left menu disappears, the quiz slides center in the player which now looks like a big box with nothing but a submit button on it. I would like the whole player to resize once the left menu disappears so that there is a nice neat tight frame around the quiz question slides only and not tons of extra space left and right because of the missing left menu space is still there.

I know I can completely turn off the player elements on the quiz question slides but that's not what i want to do because it completely changes the look and feel, I think the player just needs to adapt.

Help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Renata and welcome to Heroes!

This sounds like expected behavior of the Storyline player - and there is not a way to change the overall slide size or how much of the player is shown based on the elements included in each slide. You may want to look at including the menu as a top right or left drop down instead of a sidebar - that way the user wouldn't see the slide being resized when it's not on a slide that includes the menu.

Thank you for answering my question. I appreciate it very much because now at least I can stop troubleshooting with the knowledge that this just isn't possible.

I'm amazed however that this is "expected" player behavior. I don't think it should be expected at all. I think what I'm trying to do is what "expected" behavior should be like. Why would you have huge empty space on the left and right of a quiz when the menu disappears? It just doesn't look professional at all this way. There should be a solution for this. I'm surprised something so simple has not already been addressed.

thanks again Ashley!

Sorry that it's not the answer you're looking for Renata - but I wanted to explain a bit more about why this seems to be expected. If the menu is removed from a slide within the individual slide properties - you wouldn't want the slide to scale to fill that space of the player, as then elements of your slide may be misplaced or displayed incorrectly. On the reverse side, shrinking the player to match the slide size when elements are removed from the player would also change the overall display size and depending on how you've set up your player/browser settings - then the course may be resizing or scaling again. Keeping the story size(slide size) and then the overall player dimensions allows for the most seamless transition as users navigate from one slide to the next.

If you'd like to see different behavior, you're always welcome and encourage to share your thoughts in the form of a feature request.
