Resource Links not working on Published Story

May 07, 2014

I have several resources to which I would like Learners to have access; I have added them via the 'Resources' section in the 'Player'. I successfully publish the story, but none of the links does anything when selected. Suggestions?

Hi April,

Welcome to E-Learning Heroes!

First, can you tell me how you're viewing the published presentation, please? Are you viewing the published output files locally, or are you uploading to a web server or LMS?

If you're viewing your published files locally, this may be the problem. If you view a published Storyline presentation on your local hard drive or send it to someone else to view on their local hard drive, you'll encounter security restrictions from the computer, web browser, Flash Player, and network that'll cause various features of your content to fail.

To properly test your published content and share it with others, upload it to the environment for which it was published. Please review the article below for more information:

Publishing and Sharing Articulate Storyline Content

  • I suggest using SCORM Cloud for your course - it's a great place to test SCORM content.
  • Another option would be to use our Tempshare server. Just keep in mind that this server is only available for testing content - it is not officially supported by Articulate and all content will be removed automatically after 10 days.
  • You're always welcome to try out Articulate Online, as well - it's available for a free 30 day trial.

If you've uploaded the project and still have trouble accessing the Resources, please share your .story file here. I'd be happy to take a look at what's happening.

Thanks!

Thanks, Christine!

I have published it to my desktop AND to our webserver with different problems.

On my desktop, launching the 'story.html' --the screencast (screen recording i made within Storyline) works and Resources do not

On the server, launching the 'story.html' ---the screencast does not work and Resources do not launch

On the server, launching the SWF --the screencast works, but still not the Resources.

When I say the Resources won't work, they appear---but the individual links do not function:

I don't think posting the module anywhere will help, since the links are internal to my company. (So you won't be able to access them.) If you think differently, please let me know.

Hi April,

By "not functioning" are you not seeing any sort of browser window open at all, or do the links not load properly?

If you're not seeing anything at all, that would be something I could look into. If the pages aren't loading, that would be something I couldn't fix.

It could also be an issue of browser restrictions - make sure you don't have pop-up blockers enabled in your web browser.

Is the LMS or server internal as well? If not, you could share the URL and I could do a little testing with my browser collection to see how it functions.

Thanks!

April Bonner

There is no response to clicking on the links--no window opens, nothing.

The web server is internal also.

A few moments later....

I was able to get the 'resources' to work, by launching training from the browser (cut and paste the http;/ address into IE address bar) rather than launching directly from the server. However, now the screencast will not work from either the .html or .swf version. Grrrr.....

Hi April,

Thanks for sharing the file!

I'm glad to hear that you were able to get the resources working. Just as a tip, it's always best to access your course from the URL and not from a server folder. This is actually why I was asking about the host, but I'm happy to hear that you've been able to try that out.

In your course i see a "Running the report" scene - I assume this is the scene you're referring to, correct? The other scene "Video scene" contains no content in the version I downloaded.

• I published for "Web" and uploaded to my personal web server for testing:

WEB TestingForApril

• I published for "LMS" and uploaded to SCORM Cloud for testing:

LMS TestingForApril

In both versions, the screen recording plays successfully for me in Google Chrome.

Could you please take a look and let me know if they work for you as well?

If those play properly for you, it may have something to do with how the files are located on the server, or it may be an issue with a MIME type for that server. If you've never had a video from a course play properly using this server in the past, you may want to check out the articles below:

Articulate Support - MP4 videos require a MIME type on your server

Articulate Support - FLV videos require a MIME type on your server

Let me know how it goes :)

Thanks very much, April!
