Responsive player - change color of the black bars at the top and bottom?

Feb 15, 2017

Does anybody know a way to change the color of the black bars that appear at the top and bottom of the screen in Storyline 360 responsive player? Anybody found a workaround to change it?

Thanks!

Hey there Marie!

The black bars appear when the aspect ratio of your Story Size does not match the aspect ratio of your mobile device. Unfortunately there isn't a way to change the color of those black bars, but you can adjust the aspect ratio of your Story Size to create a fullscreen effect, which would remove the black bars completely.

With the responsive player, your content will scale up or down to fit the length or width of the device, but Storyline will never stretch your slide to fill the entire screen, since that would distort your slide design. In general, you'll want to use an aspect ratio of 4:3 for tablets and 16:9 for mobile phones for a fullscreen experience.

Thanks for your answer!

Ok, I see. But in that case we need to publish two different versions with different aspect ratio depending on what device the user will use. Am I right?

We want to be able to use only one version and for some of our customers it is very important to remove the black color of those bars. So, is there any other workaround to change the color. Can we change it in any code after publishing?

That's a great question! You certainly don't have to publish two different versions. If you're unsure of which devices your learners are going to use, we generally recommend an aspect ratio of 4:3.

Unfortunately there isn't a way to change the black color, but I'd encourage you to reach out to our Product Development team in the form of a feature request to let them know more about your idea.  The beauty of Articulate 360 is that we're able to roll out updates pretty frequently, so I appreciate you letting us know how we can improve the functionality in future updates.

I'n not aware of a way to change the color in the code after publishing, but our team does not support the modification of published output, so I'll leave it to the community to share their experience with that here. :)
