Restart a screen timeline
Feb 24, 2015
I have a Storyline 2 course with a fully customised skin. I'm not using the Storyline skin.
I have a Replay icon on each screen. Is there anyway to replay a screen when the icon is selected? I want to be able to restart the timeline when on a screen? There is no trigger to restart timeline that I can see.
On most screens where there are no interactions, I have just applied a jump to same slide when the Replay icon is selected and this works fine. However, for screens with clickable areas that go to another slide or shows layers, this approach does not work.
Need help!

Or is it possible to execute a javascript that will restart the timeline? If so what would I write?
Alexandra: I work at company that uses a Replay button, basically we override the Submit button and connect to a "dummy" scene that has a "go to previous slide" trigger on it. This works well when you want the learner to replay the base layer of a slide. Gets trickier if you want to replay layers, though. Javascript, maybe. Steve Flowers, THE superhero might have some ideas.
Hi Alexandra,
There isn't a "restart timeline" trigger as you mentioned - but you could use the set up that Daniel mentioned, or include a "jump to slide trigger" to jump to the slide the user is on. Just ensure the slide properties are set to "reset to initial state" to allow the slide to start over.
Yes. This is the way I'd tackle this as well. To replay a layer, you could use a similar trick by opening a blank layer that hides the original layer then reopens the original layer (you'd need to specify the layer in the trigger) as long as reset to initial state is configured.
Thanks everyone for help. I will have to try the opening a blank layer to see what happens. The trouble with this module is there are multiple layers on most slides, each with their own audio.
For most screens when you select the replay button I set it to jump to the same screen and it works fine. It's just 'hub' type pages that are the issue.
I did get some help where using variables worked with these 'hub' pages. It was very long winded, but it worked.
Thanks Daniel! I was trying to work out how to place a reset slide on my master & thought I'd have to look into java. This is a really elegant and simple solution :)
Glad this discussion is still helping out! :)
You are welcome. Glad it helped.
Thank you!
I created a "replay" button on the original layer and set that to hide the "original" layer and open up the "blank" layer.
Then i set the "blank" layer to show the "original" layer. Works like a dream after setting the "reset to initial state".
Glad this was able to assist you as well Matthew. Thanks for popping in to share.
Thank you!
Welcome to E-Learning Heroes ma bo :) Glad this was able to assist you as well.
Hi all!
I am trying to keep all my "standard" buttons on a Master slide and used the workaround in this discussion for the Replay button. I created a dummy slide with the trigger "jump to previous slide when timeline starts", and it works perfectly, except that there is a visible jump or flash when I press replay, whether the dummy slide is completely blank or has the same background as the other slides.
Has anyone else had this issue? Should I be using a trigger condition other than "when timeline starts"?
Hi Silvia,
I know lots of folks have used that trigger set up - and the Flash is inconsistent based on loading and speed of your browser and connection. I have seen folks add in a ... to a page to indicate "loading" perhaps that would help on your transition slide?
Thanks Ashley! I am getting the "flash" right in my Storyline preview as well as the html_5 in Chrome with a very fast connection.
I am thinking I may have to go slide by slide, which is tedious.
Hi Silvia!
We do have a similar issue reported for HTML5 output, which is what displays in the preview of Storyline 3 and/or Storyline 360. Are you using one of these software versions?
I'll add this thread to the report so that we can track user impact as well as update you here when we can.
If you have a .story file to share for our team and testing, please feel free to share.
Hi Leslie,
Yes, I am using Storyline 360.
I'll try and upload a test file later, I'll have to take most of the content out due to confidentiality.
Thanks!
Thanks, Silvia. A test file would be very helpful. We'll be here when you're ready!
So I think I fixed my problem; I have a .25 second fade transition between slides, so it would always "transition" to and from the replay slide even if it was empty. The jump problem was due to not having removed the player buttons from the slide. And the "flash" was the fading to and from a white screen. I solved it by inserting the same background master as the rest of the project. That's kind of a cheat and wouldn't work maybe for other situations, but as my project mostly has the same background it will work for now.
Thanks!
Nice troubleshooting, Silvia! Thanks for letting me know how you solved it. Best of luck on the rest of your project!
Hey folks! I'm happy to let you know that we just released Update 12 for Storyline 360, and you can check out the new features and fixes here!
Specifically included in this version is a fix to address the issue where the HTML5 output would sometimes flicker when navigating between slides. Simply update Storyline to the latest version and republish your project to see the fix. Here's how updating Storyline 360 works.
I'm happy to hear how you make out!
