Restore on Mouse Leave does not work?

Jan 28, 2014

Hi Heroes,

I have a Normal caption box explaining something that changes state to Hidden when the mouse hovers over a Hotspot. When the mouse hovers of the Hotspot a different caption changes state to Normal to be seen.

When I move the mouse off the Hotspot, I want the original caption box to reappear in Normal state. I thought by checking the "Restore on Mouse Leave" check-box it would do that. But it does not.

Thoughts?

Rick - thank you for the easy workaround. I created a custom state on my rectangle called "Off" and deleted the shape. Then I changed my trigger to shange state of rectangle to "Off" instead of "hidden" on mouse hover, and left the box checked for "restore on mouse leave". The trigger works as intended and only when the mouse is hovered over the button can you see the progress meter. It reappears when the mouse leaves the button. And it only took me about 30 seconds to fix.

There must be a glitch on the hidden state.

THAT. Hidden wouldn't work for me either but this did the trick. Thank you Jennifer...!

Hi, I have tried all morning to get hotspots to restore to the normal states on two objects when the mouse is NOT hovered over the hotspot. I have tried the following, as per the instructions in all of the posts I can see on why "restore mouse on leave" does not work:

1. Added two new custom states "View" and "MouseOver" to replace the default "Hover" and "Normal" states

2. Added a 100% transparent fill to the text box and picture

However, I still cannot get my objects to return to the normal (View) state when the mouse leaves the hotspot. Is this anything to do with the fact that I am trying to get this work on the slide master? I have created an animated side menu & simply want to make the menu items stand out when the mouse hovers over each one & for each one to go back to the normal state when the mouse moves away.

I've tried all morning so far, my side menu is working fine but I just wanted to "jazz it up" - please can anyone help?

Thanks

Hi Ashley, sorry I wasn't clear. I meant that I had added two custom states to the two objects that I want to restore to their "normal" state when the mouse is not hovered over the hotspot. These feature in the side menu which is set on the slide master.

I've attached a basic copy of the file.

Thanks

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for sharing the items here. I looked at your file and I see the behavior in your file, although I'm not able to replicate it in a new file set up as yours is with the mouse over trigger associated with the hotspot or an individual item on the slide master. A few thoughts though, instead of using a hotspot - why not group those objects together or make them one image so that you could cut down on the number of triggers and objects in your timeline? Also, you created a custom state for these - but if you used the built in state of Hover (as described here) it would all behave on it's own and you wouldn't need to utilize the triggers as you have set up here.

Thanks for taking the time to have a look at the file Ashley. I have not grouped the objects as when you group them you cannot add a state to the group (or at least I can't seem to do that) & the reason I added my own custom states is that was the suggestion described within this post - the recommendation by Jennifer Boettcher & several others who said custom states worked for them & the built-in states did not work with restore on mouse leave. Do you have any other suggestions as to how I can get the effect I am looking for on the mouse hover over the menu items? Thanks

Hi Lisa,

This thread is a bit older, and therefore I can't speak to the workarounds offered - but testing in my own file using the built in hover state worked as expected (as did a custom state with triggers - but that's more to set up!) so I'd start with that and if you're still having difficulty with your file you'll also want to confirm that you're working on project files as described here.

Hi Ashley, I have re-considered your previous sugestions & came up with a solution for this - remove the hotspots completely! It seems that the "restore on mouse leave" doesn't always work correctly with hotspots. I have seen a few other posts about this behaviour in addition to this one, which is why I did not raise it as a new post as someone may have just referred me here anyway.

I removed the hotspots & any custom states I had added. I re-added the built-in Hover state for all of the images & the text boxes then grouped them & the behaviour is as I wanted now. The menu items change/expand on hover & return to their normal size/state when the mouse leaves.

For some reason, I thought hotspots was the obvious answer & that they could provide me with a way of covering the whole combined area of the image & the text box when hovered.

Sometimes you really just need to 'talk it over/share ideas' with someone before you can think clearly & see the solution! Thanks for your help & I hope this helps others if they run into this problem too.
