I'm trying to create an object (tube, on the right) that would change states when the user hovers mouse over a rectangle. I have created four states for the tube, marked A, B, C, D (with some additional objects in some of the states). When the mouse leaves the rectangle, something weird happens: the tube state changes, but not to one of the states I have created. It converts to some totally novel state that does not exist (empty tube, no letters, no symbols).

Have you considered using the Normal state for the "Empty" state? That way, the image will always default back to normal/empty when the mouse isn't hovering over the shape.
