Restrict Navigation for Initial Review and Change to Free

Jun 17, 2014

Hi There!

I was wondering how difficult it would be to restrict navigation the first time a learner review the course and then upon returning to the course - the navigation is would be free (open).

I am thinking about building a menu that unlocks itself as the user progress, but because the content is so long and there are many scenes, they could come back to the course afterwards and select the scene of their choice.

This course would be posted on the LMS as well as this occurs.

Thanks

Hi!  It sounds like you want the "Restricted" navigation option in your Player, rather than the "Locked" one.  It lets learners revisit anything they've already seen, but prevents them from skipping ahead.  Here's the page about customizing the Player:

http://community.articulate.com/tutorials/products/customizing-the-player-menu.aspx

And here's the information about the different kinds of navigation from that page:

  1. Click the gear icon (the Additional Options button) at the lower-right of the Menu pane.
  2. When the Additional Options window appears, use the Navigation Restriction selector to choose one of the following:
    • Free: This allows learners to click on the titles in the course's menu to navigate to any part of the course at any time. They can view whatever slides they wish, in any order.
    • Restricted: This means learners can view the current slide and any slide they've previously viewed, but they can't use the menu to jump ahead or skip over slides.
    • Locked: This means learners can only view the slides in the order you've designed. They can't use the menu to jump ahead or skip over slides, nor can they use it to skip back to any previously viewed slides.

Hi Melissa,

In addition to what Andrew already shared about the player's menu and the navigation settings - you'll also want to check what you set as your resume behavior within the player settings.   If you want the user to always pick up where they left off, I'd set it to "always resume" and when running in LMS choose the ignore cookie option so that your LMS can handle the resume data.

Is there any way to make the menu visible only after a user has completed the entire course?  We don't want them to just jump to the end without actually listening to the course so we disable the next button until the slide is complete. However, when someone wants to review the course, we would like them to be able to immediately go to any part of the course.

Also, is there a way to have the menu be collapsed unless a user clicks the menu on the title bar?

Hi Janice,

If you're using "restricted navigation" as a part of the player menu the user can only proceed to the next slide in order, but upon viewing them all they'll be able to return to other slides that they previously saw.

As for leaving the menu hidden until the user accesses it, you could place it in the top toolbar vs the sidebar. There isn't a way to have it "docked" to the side upon clicking though.
