Results Slide for a Set of Questions Banks

Nov 19, 2015

Dear all,

I am currently developing a course which has the gaming logic of the TV show "Who will be a Millionaire?". For this, I am using 4 different question banks which are separated through success info slides and "keep on going" slides.

At the end I want to report the overall quizzing grade of all question banks together (passing grade is 80%), so my setting for the final result slide is as depicted in the attachment.

However, if I test different settings of the result slide on my LMS, I keep on getting unexpected results. For example, I am finishing the course with 12 out of 15 questions and the result slide says I achieved 92,3% (which is wrong in my appreciated game logic, as it should be 80%). On the other hand, if I finish with 10 out of 15 questions I receive 100%, (seemingly because I reached 100% of questions within question bank 2).

I already tried different approaches, e.g. inserting a result slide for each question bank and calculating the overall result via a separate result slide based with the setting "Selected result slides", but I never get the expected result.

Does anyone have an idea how I could correct that?

Many thanks in advance, Roxi

Hi Emily,

thanks for your reply! I checked the behaviour of the course by "step-by-step debugging" the variables and found out, that the calculation algorithm works as follows: (sum of points achieved in questions) / (sum of viewed questions)

My assumption was, that the calculation works like: (sum of points) / (sum of questions a learner could possibly view based on question banks), which also explains why I never saw the appreciated results.

We set up a course according to the "Who will be a Millionaire" principle in the past (before my example above), which worked exactly like my assumption on Storyline 1, but after the upgrade of the .story file to Storyline 2 format, the course calculations were totally confused. Did Articulate change this calculation scheme in Storyline 2?

Many thanks,

Roxi

Hi Roxi!

I'm not sure that I'm following your report here. What do you mean by sum of viewed questions vs sum of questions learner could possibly view based on question banks?

If you have a question bank of 20 questions and 10 are set to randomly be shown to user. We would calculate the score for x/10 not x/20. Is that what you are asking?

Hi Leslie,

I am sorry for my cryptic expressions. What I found out in my setup is, that Storyline seems to calculate in the following way: If I go through the quiz and make it to question 14, but I actually fail at that question, Storyline calculcates the total sum of points for all questions banks like 13 (because of the 13 correct answers I gave earlier in the quiz) divided by 14 (because in my case, the quiz ends abruptly as soon as the user enters a wrong answer).

My assumption had been that Storyline calculates the overall score as you described it. Could it be a problem that I force the course (and the current question bank) to end after one wrong answer has been given, so that Storyline is unable to know how many questions there could have been in total (which is 15)?

Thank you, Roxi

Hi Leslie,

indeed I am only using standard result slides and question banks setups. Not sure, whether I would be able to customize my story-file so far as to have my own custom result calculation.

For your reference, please find my story-file with the applied setup attached. Maybe you have a hint for me to correct my issue (if that's even possible, given the game setup).

Appreciating your help very much!

Hi, Roxanne -- Many thanks for your patience while your file was reviewed! It appears that incorrect layers are jumping directly to the results slide, so if learners are able to do that and bypass all the other necessary quiz slides, it will not report correctly. Please note that learners must hit all of the quiz slides before hitting the results slide to avoid issues. Does that make sense?

Hi Christie, thanks for taking time to review my file. In fact, this is what I thought would be the root cause of the problem. It makes sense, but given the game setup, I will just stick to my current solution, where the quiz is considered successfully completed if you achieve 92% (12/13) instead of 80% (12/15).

Thanks for providing me with the quick feedback! :-)
