Revert to Storyline 2 after 360 Trial Expires

Feb 08, 2017

Annoyingly I have locked myself out of Storyline 2 after my 360 trial ended. Is there an easy way to revert to my licensed software? Do I need to uninstall 360? Unless this is simple I advise other users to think twice before having a play with the 360 trial.

Hi Alyssa,  I need to be able to use both Storyline 2 and 360. We work with consultants and other developers who don't have 360 - I need to be able to produce and upload in both versions of the software. For example, I designed an icon in 360, sent it to my colleague and he is unable to open the file b/c he does not have 360. So, I tried opening Storyline 2 and creating it there, but when I select 'Save As' it automatically saves it as a 360 file. Can you help?

Hi Kristin,

You can definitely use Storyline 360 side by side with Storyline 2 on the same computer. Storyline 2 projects should not automatically save as Storyline 360 projects. Can you tell me more about when you noticed that happening?

To verify that the project saved as Storyline 2, right-click the file and select Open With >> Storyline 2. Does the file open with Storyline 2, or do you see an error message?

Hi there John,

Thanks for the screenshot--we definitely wouldn't expect all of that extra white space around the slide. Like Wendy said, I'd be interested to know the story size of the Storyline 2 slides vs. the Storyline 360 slides.

If there's a particular file giving you trouble, share the Storyline 2 version here. We'll open it with Storyline 360 to compare the behavior to what you're seeing.

I can do that.

I just edited a file in Storyline 3 that was started in Storyline 2. Saved the 3 file. Then, right clicked and converted file to Storyline 2. Sent to the vendor. Now the vendor can't open it b/c they don't have Storyline 3, even though the file is Storyline 2! This is a huge problem. They get the same error "This project cannot be opened. It was created in a newer version of Storyline".

Thanks, Kristin. Could you show me the steps you take when you say that you saved a Storyline 3 file, then right-clicked and converted it to Storyline 2?

By the way, you can Install Peek for Mac from the Mac App Store or Peek for Windows by clicking the Install button in your Articulate 360 desktop app. It's a quick and easy process. And trust me, once you make your first Peek, you'll be hooked! I know I am. 😊

That was really helpful, thank you! That setting doesn't revert the Storyline 360 file to a Storyline 2 file. What you're actually changing there is the version of Storyline that Windows will use to open the file.

Storyline 360 has lots of features that Storyline 2 doesn't have. Because of that, it's not backwards compatible, and you'll see an error message when Windows tries to open the file with Storyline 2.

Hi Kristin,

I'm sorry that it's caused extra work for you.

I did want to clarify that if the course was originally created in Storyline 2, when you opened it in Storyline 3 or 360, a back up copy should have been created. That would allow you to use the original course in Storyline 2.

Please let me know if there is anything else we can do to help.
