Reviewer can't see Engage slides in un-zipped Storyline

Mar 14, 2014

I imported some Engage slides into my Storyline project. I emailed the published presentation to my SME with instructions for him to play it. But when he gets to the Engage slides they do not display (it's a blank slide). I checked & the web objects for my Engage slides are in the folder but for some reason the process of unzipping the folder (onto his desktop) seems to unlink the Engages.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Hi Brent,

Are you sharing the .story project with him or the published version? When you import an Engage interaction into Storyline, a copy of your original interaction (.intr) file actually gets stored in the Storyline project file.  This means that you can transfer your story file to another computer or another developer and still edit the Engage interaction, as long as the other computer also has the Articulate Engage program installed and activated with a valid serial number.

If your SME is viewing the published output, they'll want to test it within the intended environment to see Engage elements as they're insert as web objects as if they view it on their local hard drive, you'll encounter security restrictions from the computer, web browser, Flash Player, and network that'll cause various features of your content to fail.

Hi Ashley, thanks for your reply.

I was sharing the published version (zipped & then unzipped onto someone else's local hard drive). I understand that the best  method of sharing is to use the web or an LMS.

The link you sent me is helpful. It seems to be saying that the only way I can reliably share a published Storyline offline is to publish it for CD before burning, zipping, emailing or putting it on a USB drive, and then the reviewer must click on the Launch_Story.exe file to launch it. Is that correct?

Hi Brent,

Yes, if you need colleagues to view it locally first, I'd recommend using the publish to CD method. If they are able to access the internet, you could also look at using one of the web options for testing purposes only:

  • Tempshare: This is a free service provided by Articulate for testing Storyline content. Note: Uploaded files will be deleted after 10 days.
  • Amazon S3: Amazon S3 offers free hosting with generous usage limits. If you go over your limit, you'll be charged a graduated fee.
  • Dropbox: Place your published output in the Public folder in your Dropbox account to share it with others.
  • Google Drive: Change the story.html file to index.html, and set the sharing permissions to PublicHere's how.
