Safari Support with Storyline2

Apr 07, 2015

We have Sumtotal's LMS (version 8.2 SP7) but when uploading the published file (with SCORM) and try to see it with iPad (safari), there are some issues. Would you please tell us if these are known problems and also is there any workaround??

[Issues]

1) Pause button disappear

2) when video is embedeed, the narration would NOT start automatically but we have to click 'repeat' button

3) Cannot use Test-it mode

Hi Mariko,

I'm sorry to hear about the odd behavior you're experiencing. In regards to the items  mentioned:

1) Our QA team is aware of an issue where the pause/play button on the seekbar disappears when viewing the HTML5 output. They're currently looking into this, so I 'll share additional information here once I have additional info.

2) Is the narration within the same file as the video or are they separate elements? Are they triggered based on something? I assume you're referring to the rewind button to replay it - does that replay the audio and video?  Due to current limitations in HTML5 browsers, Articulate Storyline's HTML5 output will only auto-play one video at a time. You'll need to take this into consideration when developing content for HTML5 delivery. If you have more than one video on the same slide scheduled to play at the same time, only one will play automatically in HTML5 output. Learners will need to manually play additional videos on the same slide.

3) I think you'd want to test this at a site such as SCORM Cloud which is an industry standard for testing LMS/SCORM content to see how it behaves outside of your LMS as well.

Hi, Ashley

1) OK - will wait for the update.. actually we have to deliver the eLearning to our customer in May, hope we have a fix before that -;)

2) The narration is within the video file. We have a base page (A) and a video (V) is embedded in the base page (A). When we see it with safari, the original narration with the base page does not start (only the grahics.) Meaning, A does not start the narration. With IE and other browser for PC, the video (V) starts automatically (with narration) though with safari, we have to click 'start' button to start the (V) itself. When we start V file, it works fine with video and narration. The difference is there is no start/ stop button for V with PC brower, while with safari, start/ stop button shows up and the user has to click it. Is it the right behaviour?

3) We tried SCORM Cloud and the result was the same...

Hi Mariko,

1) We'll keep you posted here, and I don't have any information or timelines to share unfortunately

2) Yes, in Safari videos need a click to play often, and aren't started automatically so this sounds expected. If the video and the audio elements are not in sync with one another, that's an issue we'd want to take a look at further.

3) If test mode didn't work in SCORM Cloud either we'll want to take a look at your file. Can you share a copy of the .story file here with us? You may want to pair it down to just that section so that we can focus on that.

Hi Ashley,

The 1st slide includes the video. If you click the camera icon in the map, the video will show up as attached. The problem is the narration in the base page does not start when we see it with safari.

I tried the Test/Try mode via the link you provided. I double-clicked the hot spot in slide #2 that should trigger to jump to slide #3 but nothing happens as same as before... my colleague also tried it with his iPad and the result was same.

Hi Chie,

My apologies, I didn't notice that the video was embedded in a marker as I only saw the icon. I see the behavior you're mentioning now, but I'd like to know more about the video type you added to the course as certain media types aren't supported in the HTML5 output as detailed here. There is also an issue currently with showing markers in HTML5 as described here.

I'm able to double click on the element on slide 2, although it seems to not occur on my first attempt, I see the hint caption. I'm using a ipad mini with iOS 8.1

Hello Ashley,

The video type is wmv file, I think it is categorized as "Video" type HTML5 supports. I don't have any issues regarding showing markers as our setting is to show the marker after clicking the camera icon and it works without any problems so I dont think it is related to our narration issue.

My ipad is a ipad with iOS8.3... I changed the trigger setting from "double click" to "click" and it worked so I think this test-mode issue is not about storyline but ipad (iOS) & double click so we will use "click" only for the trigger.

Hi Chie,

I wonder if you could share just a copy of that video. I tested this myself with some random images, audio and video files I had and it worked for me to play the slide audio and the video at the same time in the mobile player and the HTML5 output in mobile safari. Can you take a look at the example I posted here?

Ashley Terwilliger-Pollard

Hi Chie,

The video seems to work - again I tested in another file, and loaded that one to a testing server here. I also put the video into your original project, and just published that one slide. Again, this plays for me as well - although it does take a second to load, and on a revisit I had to click to play it. I attached a copy of that update .story file with the one slide. Can you try publishing it and see if that works on your end?

Chie F

Hi Ashley,

Thank you for the file. I published and uploaded it in SCORM Cloud but it does not work well. The narration in the slide starts automatically but the video does not start after clicking the camera icon. I tapped the frame of video screen in the balloon then the balloon disappeared and only the video narration started.

Hi Ashley,

I have the same problem that Mariko experienced. The Video Controls did not show up for me when viewing on iPad Safari as HTML5.  Would you be able to share what the workarounds ? I will really appreciate it. I have projects that due by end of May for my client. Any helps or suggestions are welcome.  I also attached the Storyline file that I am working. Thank you in advance.

Hi Ben,

The video controls on the video itself or as I shared with Mariko the play/pause buttons on the seekbar? The latter is something our team is looking into a fix for as detailed here. But you're referring to the video controls on the actual video? What iOS are you testing the course in?

Also, your file mentioned the volume controls - You may find that the volume slider doesn't work on slides with video content when you view the HTML5 output in mobile Safari on an iPad/iPhone.

Apple has chosen to ignore volume settings for video content since iOS devices have built-in volume controls. (See Apple's developer documentation for details.) As a result, you'll need to use the volume controls on your iPad or iPhone to adjust the volume of video content in your course.

Hi Ashley,

My apology. I was actually referring to video controls itself, not the play/pause button on the seekbar. As you can see from the sample Storyline file there was the video control in the middle of the slide. The same video control is not showing up on the ipad Safari. I have attached the screenshot. I am testing this on iOS 8.

Hi Benny,

Thanks for clarifying and showing that image. I think it's cause you're using it for audio only and removed the video element. You can see I uploaded a copy of your file and a second slide with a video here. That second video includes the playbar (it looks differently in HTML5 vs. Flash or the mobile player). If you view that first link in Chrome as well, you'll see the same behavior in the HTML5 output. There isn't a true audio play bar besides the seekbar in Storyline, so you may want to search through the community forums for other examples of what they've done.
