Safari Web Object on iPhone

Aug 07, 2018

Hello,

I'm not sure if I've encountered a feature or a bug.  Maybe user error?

Storyline 3. I have videos as web objects.  When on an iPhone, with Safari, after the video plays, it's within 'something' which I have to 'x', close, before the Next arrow is available in my course.  (I'm sorry, I am sure there's a term for it, but I'm not that technical!)  See first attachment, upper left.  See 2nd screen shot for the Next/Prev arrows after closing.  There are multiple videos and it's the same for each.

The issue is not noted on an iPad or MacBook, so it seems to be related to the iPhone's small screen.  No issues with Chrome on the iPhone.

I downloaded 3.4 and republished, though I don't think this is related to the Safari autoplay issue.  That didn't make a difference in the behavior.  Due to where the videos are hosted, the user has to click Play to start the video.  We have resigned ourselves to that.  It's the whole deal with the Next arrow.

Any suggestions?  Thank you, Judy

Hi Alyssa, I'm new to Storyline, so don't know what I was expecting, only what my customer wanted.

We discovered that as a 'feature' of where the videos are hosted, Brightcove, if we added this parameter 'playsinline=true' to the Web Object address, then the course did not go to full screen.  I can now say that when I said 'something' above, I meant full-screen.  The user was forced to exit full-screen to see the Storyline player controls.

I also discovered that while a couple of weeks ago this was not an issue in Chrome, it was also yesterday before the above change.

Since I don't know that much about the Brightcove player, it seems like the browser default player was taking precedence and going to full-screen.  Once we told the Brightcove player to play inline, then we were okay.

When we had a learner test before the change, he wasn't surprised he had to exit full screen mode on his iPhone.  He told us that's just what he had to do when watching a video on his phone.

So this thread might help someone who hosts videos on Brightcove, but the way we discovered operating systems, browsers and players can change, it could be a whole new ball game in six months!

Thanks for your response Alyssa!
