You can edit a screen recording after it is inserted in the Slide. You would select the video, then click on Options, then Edit video. you can crop, and trim the video from here.
You can also select the video itself and crop it using the arrows that appear when you mouse over the corners of the selected box.
thank you for the hint, even though this was not exactly what I am looking for. My final product shall be a word document, so I suppose, I have to insert the screencast as step-by-step slides, right? And once, a screencast has been inserted this way, cropping of the screenshots is no longer possible, right?

The screenshots in step by step mode are actually videos that cannot be selected to scale or crop

If these are added as Step by Step, they are no longer editable. The edit properties are only for the videos.
