scenes numbering

May 16, 2012

Hi,

I'm currently working on a project with lot of scenes. These scenes seems to be numbering in a default (creating) order. Is it possible to change this numbering to have a linear presentation?<

Example : my "starting scene" have an "13." Can it be just "1." ?

Hi Klaas,

Thanks for the image - although from that I'm not sure I'm seeing the issue with it being alphabetized? As if that were the case scene "6 Afsluiting" would be in the wrong location? Are you having difficulty with this in story view or utilizing the menu within the player? If it's in the menu, you will want to look at either manually moving them within the menu or using the "reset from story option" as detailed here.

(I meet or hear about other Terwilligers all the time, New York State is very Dutch heavy. :-)  but I would have never thought it to be a common name. Is it the equivalent in Dutch of "Smith" or "Johnson" here in the United States?)

Hello Ashley,

Thanks for the tip to use the 'reset from story option'. The physical order of scenes is allright now! My menu was a mess...  But now I'm back at the numbering problem (see picture). If you look at the scene titles you can see the alphabetized order I mentioned earlier (afb-afs-inf-mel-sta). But the numbering doesn't really matter for the learners, so I can live with it :)

(It seems that your name is deduced from Dutch and is not actually Dutch itself. So it only sounds Dutch; I've never met anyone with the same name on this part of the ocean. We have "Smit" and "Jansen" as common names)

Hi Klaas,

The numbering is added based on when scenes are created - but as you mentioned, if your users won't see it - then hopefully not something to worry about.

(You're blowing my mind? Not actually Dutch?! I'm going to have to investigate this further - possibly changed in the Ellis Island method that happened to most people.)

Hi, Ashley. Thanks for the fast response.

I'm looking to organize the scenes (and, within the scenes, the slides) in story view, both to aid me in designing this AND to make it easier for the next designer to maintain it (I retire in 5 months.)

I'll include an image of the current state of affairs, but here is how my project is organized in my head:

Introduction
Quick option to turn captions on or off
First branch to main modules
Module 1 (AssayDesigner)
Slide to branch to topics:
Topic 1
Subtopic 1
Subtopic 2
Subtopic 3(contains a section that can also be accessed from Subtopic 1; returning to the right subtopic is managed with a variable.)
Topic 2
Topic 3
Module 2 (Load/edit)
Slide to branch to topics:
Topic 1
Topic 2
Topic 3
Topic 4

The last slide on each of the Topics has buttons for:
GoTo Module 1
GoTo Module 2
Exit

Here is what it currently looks like to Storyline, with all the sections collapsed. What you can't see here is that the majority of Module 1/Topic 1/Subtopic 3's slides appear as following Module 1/Topic 1/Subtopic 1. That makes it particularly hard to see where a specific slide in that sequence is.

Hi David,

First off, I wanted to let you know that when you reply via email your signature is included and any attachments that you've included in the email aren't posted to the forum thread. You're welcome to edit your post to remove that information if you'd like.

This article describes how to work within the scene order/story view (it's for SL1, but similar within SL2).  Also have you review the information here on how to work within Story view.

Hi, Ashley.

Thanks for the links. I had seen (through experimentation) that cut-and-paste could control the order of the scenes, but I didn't realize how to insert a scene between two others. (Good to know.) In my case, I would rather not try this because I have quite a few triggers involved, and I've noticed that these will sometimes (always?) get set to point to unknown slides when I cut and paste.

The note about changing the order of triggers and the resulting impact on scene order is very encouraging, though; I will give that a try shortly.

Many thanks,
David

PS - thanks, too, for pointing out that my email signature was included in the posts...

Hi David,

Great video! Exactly what I needed!

By the way, do you know if future versions of the program will incorporate the drag & drop capability for the scenes, as Jamie Morgan already suggested?

I think this feature would be very helpful and time-saving when managing several scenes in a single project.

Best regards,
Cristina

I'm working in Storyline 2 and trying to change the numbering. I have everything I need in the order I need it with branching, etc.  The issue is that when I publish it in Word, the numbers of the slides determine the order they appear in the printed version. We try to use this in our review process but this issue makes it impossible.
