Scoring with triggers?

I'm trying to recreate a traditional-looking multiple choice examination paper and, with the help of some very helpful forum advice, am inching closer to success. My current problem is how to create an accurate scoring mechanism. I can get "add 1 to total" type variables to work IF the user doesn't change their selections before clicking "submit". In other words, I can allow the user to deselect their answer but I don't know how to deselect the variable change.
I have tried creating 3 states for my button (normal/selected/visited) and tried triggers to "add 1 to total" when state of button is "selected" and "subtract 1 from total" when state of button is "visited" but that doesn't work.

Instead of having +1/-1 triggers on the various buttons, I would simply add these triggers to the Submit button. That way, when the Submit button is clicked the state of the correct choices is checked and based on that the total score is increased.
Michael - once again you come to my rescue! It's easy when you know how
Many thanks.
