SCORM file changes

Sep 18, 2019

Hi Everybody,

Just a quick general question if anyone has a minute and can speak to this:  is it safe to replace (mp4) videos in the SCORM package manually? Are there any risks to doing this? Does SL "do" anything to video files it publishes to LMS/SCORM?

Any thoughts very much appreciated.

Hi Bill.

If done correctly, I cannot see any real risk in doing what you are suggesting. Storyline does a few things to video files that are embedded in the Storyline file:
1. If enable, Storyline will re-encode the video based on the compression settings.
2. Change the video file's name to a GUID that is referenced throughout the course. These IDs are referenced in the manifest file (imsmanifest.xml), the slides themselves (these are stored as JavaScript files in Storyline output\html5\data\js) and the data.js files.
3. Move all the embedded video files to the story_content folder.

Understanding the points above, if you manually replace the video (mp4) file using the exact same GUID, will preserve all the links accordingly and should not give you any issues.

Do take note that if you have the same video referenced on multiple slides, each INSTANCE of the video will have a unique GUID and this replacing one file alone will not be sufficient.

Hope this helps.
