SCORM - score not reporting in Blackboard

Nov 12, 2013

I put a Storyline module into Blackboard as a SCORM component, SCORM 2004, and chose LMS reporting as Complete/Incomplete. It did track that part of it okay. Everyone who completed it has a green checkmark.

I cannot, however, get the students' scores to report in Blackboard. In Storyline for the Publish part of it, under Tracking, I chose "Track using number of slides viewed." Do I have to choose the other option, "Track using quiz result," in order for their final score to show up?

In Blackboard, while putting the zip file in as SCORM, there is the option for grading:

Grading

  1. Grade Timing
Grade Timing When SCORM is completed, display score in Grade Center When SCO is completed, display score in Grade Center:
    Grade of First SCORM Attempt
    Grade of Last SCORM Attempt

So by choosing this option, I thought the student's final score would be display in the Grade Center.

The only thing in the Grade Center is Complete (green checkmark) or incomplete (blue timed circle).

Can anyone help with this? What we want to track in Blackboard is completion and their final score, which is gotten from the results slide. There is only 1 results slide in the module.

Thank you!

Good Afternoon Mr. Grenier.

I having a problem with Articulate Quiz Maker 09 SCORM file not reporting score to the gradebook in Blackboard 9.1.

When I publish the Quiz and click on Reporting and Tracking button I get the following screen (which is different from the above screen):

What version of Articulate Quiz Maker are you using?

Thank You.

Good Afternoon Sailaja, and welcome to Heroes!

You have posted in the Articulate Storyline Forum, so the screen capture above is from Storyline and not Quizmaker.  Quizmaker does not have the option to Track using number of slides viewed, so this would not be the root cause of the tracking problem in your LMS.

If you're experiencing issues with LMS content, please refer to this article, which outlines common issues pertaining to viewing and tracking content in an LMS.

Also, be sure to package your published content properly for your LMS.

If the issue persists, open a support case with your LMS provider, since they're your primary source of support for LMS tracking and reporting issues.

Is it still true that we must track by quiz results in Storyline in order to get the quiz information into Blackboard?? Right now we track by slides viewed and sometimes quiz results show up in Blackboard and sometimes not.

To complete the course we just want to know that the user went through all/most of the slides.

But, we also want to know what score they got.

Do we have to "program" into each course the number of slides to be completed before the quiz is released to the user?

(Please tell me no!)

We are using SCORM (not TIN CAN).

Hi there,

We are tracking by quiz results in Storyline. We need to see reporting on a learner's number of attempts in Blackboard and have run into a couple of issues.

1. Despite trying various Blackboard settings, we are only seeing one attempt recorded in the grade center regardless of the actual number of attempts taken.

2. When viewing the attempt to see individual question responses, the learner's response column consistently shows one answer choice although a variety of different answers were chosen.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Justin Grenier

Good Morning, Maggie.

  1. Attempt tracking is wholly a function of the LMS.  If you're not seeing multiple attempts tracked within Blackboard as you would expect, I would recommend contacting Blackboard for help with that.
  2. This information gets communicated to an LMS by Articulate Storyline via SCORM and AICC, and this is how you can watch the data flowing from your course to your LMS.  If you are not seeing that information in your LMS, I'd encourage you to ask your vendor why that might be.

Please let us know if you need anything else, and have a great day!

Hi Justin/Articulate,

Is there a limit of the number of answer choices on a given screen or student responses Articulate Storyline can track?

We have an assessment containing a series of freeform questions where the learner needs to identify an item by selecting the correct response from ~ 30 potential options. In the LMS, the student response is consistently showing as "g" or "null", even though all questions were answered with choices other than "g" selected.

Thank you!

Hi Maggie,

Most of the regular questions include a cap at 10 items, but I just checked a freeform pick many type and I was able to see a space for 30 items if I included that many on the slide set up. In regards to how it's showing in your LMS though, you mentioned the student's selected choices other than "g" - do you mean that "g" is the option as it's listed in the freeform pick many as they're labeled with letters (choice a, b, c, d, etc.)?

I am having trouble getting the Storyline quiz score to record in the Grade Center within Blackboard. When I pubished the Storline quiz, I made sure to use tracking and the correct results slide. When the student takes the quiz in BBoard, no grade is recorded.

In Blackboard, while putting the zip file in as SCORM, there is the option for grading:

Grading

  1. Grade Timing
Grade Timing When SCORM is completed, display score in Grade Center
  2. When SCO is completed, display score in Grade Center:
    Grade of First SCORM Attempt
    Grade of Last SCORM Attempt

I chose Grade Timing When SCORM is completed, display score in Grade Center ....but nothing happens. Can anyone help? Thanks...Heather

Hi Heather and welcome to Heroes!

Did you see Justin's original answer regarding an almost identical question:

Good Morning Jami, and welcome to Heroes!

You are exactly right.  In order to send the quiz score to your LMS, you will need to set your Reporting and Tracking Options to Track using quiz result:

Please let us know if you need anything else, and have a great day!

Heather--you may also want to look through this link (also posted above) as it shows some other helpful things to remain mindful of, one being number 3. I wasn't aware of this item and am now wondering if this is causing SCORM issues in my very own Bb course. I've avoided SCORM content, or at least the reporting of it because of how Bb handles it. One user is getting a quirky error through Bb when revisiting elearning packages and that's the only instance I've seen of this issue and I cannot even replicate the issue, but it has to do with the SCORM tracking of repeated attempts.

Hi everyone -

Does anyone know how to have Blackboard collect two quiz values based on having the Articulate Storyline have a quiz and then an attestation page?  We would like the quiz to have its own column in the Blackboard grade book and then a second column in the Blackboard grade book for the attestation results.

I have a presenter 13 course published on BB with a quiz at the end.  I have one student that is showing a green completion checkmark and others that have a "attempt in progress" even though they have completed the course and the quiz.  I can go in and see their quiz responses etc.  What is causing this?  I do not want to have to go into each students grade column individually to check if it has indeed been completed.

Hi, Alanna -- So sorry to hear of your difficulties! May I ask if you have also had a chance to see how the course is behaving when you test it in the SCORM Cloud? You may find this article, How to Troubleshoot Your LMS with SCORM Cloud, to be of some additional assistance. And have you had an opportunity to reach out to your LMS for their input?

Elizabeth Miles

Hi Alanna,

When you go to Publish > LMS > Reporting and Tracking > Tracking, are you tracking based on the number of slides viewed or on the quiz result?  I had a similar problem in Storyline where I was tracking based on number of slides viewed.  but the value I had entered was incorrect because students weren't required to view all slides.  Only the few that did received the checkmark - the majority of the attempts displayed in the gradebook as In Progress.

Hi, I am having the same problem with the rest on getting the Storyline 360 quiz score to record in the Grade Center within Blackboard. I published the Storyline quiz, and followed the basic settings to use tracking and the correct results slide. When the student takes the quiz in BBoard, no grade is recorded. I tried various combination using SCORM 2004, 2nd, 3rd, 4th Edition and also tried with SCORM 1.2 still to no avail.

Ashley Terwilliger-Pollard

Hi Abdul,

Have you already tried the steps mentioned earlier in this discussion such as testing at SCORM Cloud? Were you using a previous version of Storyline that tracked correctly in Blackboard?

Have you looked at testing the course with LMS debug mode enabled? That would allow you to see exactly what information is being passed to the LMS?

Jean Luyben

What triggers a grade to be sent to Blackboard from Storyline using SCORM?  Is it:

  • answering the final question in a quiz
  • viewing the results slide
  • clicking a "Course Complete" button

Several of my students are saying they got a score from Storyline, but it didn't show up in Blackboard.

Blackboard gives the following options of "Grade Timing":

  • When SCORM is completed, display score in Grade Center
  • When SCO is completed, display score in Grade Center

What's the difference between SCORM and SCO?
