Screen reader does not read contents on first (starting) slide
Sep 12, 2014
I'm building a module that needs to be fully accessible. It's a fairly basic and linear module, with a menu on the top (the first items to be read). I have set the screen reader visibility on required elements on the slides, as well as Alt Text for some. I used 2 screen readers: NVDA and Thunder Storm.
Here are my issues:
- The contents are not read at all in Chrome.
- The contents of my first (starting) slide are not read in Firefox. As soon as I go to another slide (either from menu or next button), the contents are read correctly. When I go back to the first first slide, the contents are ten read correctly also.
- IE reads all contents correctly right on the first slide (with the first tab)
Is there anything I can do to fix the Firefox issue?
Thanks,
Justyna

Hello Justyna,
You may want to check out this information regarding Storyline and Section 508 Accessibility Guidelines.
SInce it is working in IE, you may also want to check with your screen readers and see what browsers they support.
If you need anything further, let us know.
I have a similar problem. NVDA is not reading my first slide, but it will the rest, despite being correct in focus order. (Incidentally using Chrome). Also it's published and hosted on LMS as testing there is meant to be more accurate than in Review. It reads the volume next buttons, built in, but not the text. Please help
(Technically it is the second slide, but the first that has anything available to read by screenreader).
...I have since treed and if I click around enough I eventually on this slide come across a 'skip to main content link', which then reads it. but it's very around the houses. Is this correct, is it meant to act differently to the other slides? Is it also unavoidable that it reads out each new slide as 'clickable main landmark frame'? thanks
Hi Diane,
Sorry to hear that you ran into a similar issue. Would you be willing to upload a copy of your course here or in private by opening a support case so we can take a closer look at what's happening? We'll delete it when we're done troubleshooting!
Hi - thanks for the reply. I got it to work this time, but it seems very inconsistent. I have first to Enter the option 'Skip to Main Content', or it will not read the page, which it should normally, using down arrow or insert, down arrow. If I don't hit skip to main conent, it repeatedy circles around all the navigation buttons and or/ keeps saying blank. Is this right? I'd really appreciate, like most of us, a video's tutorial or seminar on how to use this as it's extremely important, very difficult and with hardly any guidance. I have found that crtl r to reset often solves the problem, but at it's best , it is still a giant pain! thanks
Kind regards,
