Screen Record, Test Mode: Using hover

Oct 22, 2015

Hi there,

I've found when using the test mode function of screen records that Storyline 2 doesn't recognise hovering over a hotspot as an activity.

The trigger "Submit interaction Hotspot when the user hovers the mouse over..."  results in a pop-up message saying "Invalid Answer. You must complete the question before submitting". (Screenshot attached)

I have tried to work around this by adding a trigger "Jump to next slide when user hovers over..." but I'm unable to score this action so the user will get points for hovering over the correct section.

Is this a fault with my software or am I trying to do something that's very out of the ordinary?

Can someone recommend how I might work around this?

Thanks,

Eoin

Hi Eoin,

If you've inserted a screen recording of a website as Try it or Test mode - you'll see that trigger are created for each element that they'd click on, but there aren't any triggers for hovering over an object to show a new page. If the information is changing right on the screen (like a hover drop down menu) you won't see that same action within a try it/test mode - you'll just see the menu in the down state and any clicks the user has to make on the screen. You could add in your own custom hotspot question as there is an option for "when the user hovers the mouse over" and then you could include that as a part of your scoring mechanism.

Hope that helps,

Hi Ashley,

Thank you for your quick response! I've tried adding in a new hotspot question but still experience the same 'Invalid Answer' issue, It seems as though the hotspot interaction doesn't recognise hover as a valid response.

Is there a way to assign a score to a "jump to next slide when user hovers mouse over hotspot" trigger? Is it possible to update the score without creating my own variables?

Thanks!

If you have, for example, a pick one quiz, you can work around this. Pick an object on the slide that doesn't have an interaction (or make a shape with no fill and no outline). Assign it as the correct answer. Give it a selected state that is the same as its normal state. When the user hovers, set the state of that object to selected. Then when you submit, the system accepts the answer as correct.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for your input. Unfortunately I'm using the recordings as a replica of the system so the user progresses as they complete the action rather than clicking the 'Submit' button.

I tried using the invisible shape with the changed state when the re hovers but still encounter the same issue.

I've decided that the steps requiring hover won't contribute to the user's score, they will only be assessed on the other steps requiring a click or text input.

Again, thanks for your efforts.
