Screen Recording includes audio when set to "No Audio"

Apr 23, 2018

So, I have a weird one.

I'm recording my screen to make software demos in Storyline 360. I typically do this while on a WebEx with several other people telling me where to click and such. I also connect to a remote server for the recordings. Though I always set my audio preferences to "No Audio", Storyline still captures the audio of the folks I'm connected to via WebEx. That is, it does not record my own voice, but does record everyone else's.

This shouldn't be a big problem - I just don't include the audio in the output. HOWEVER, Storyline does not work well when files are over 150MB, and I think recording the audio makes the overall Storyline file much larger than it needs to be. It would help me create smaller files if it didn't record this audio.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas on what to do?

Also, if anyone has any tips on how to handle large files with Storyline, I would appreciate that as well. I often get the "red X of death" where the files won't open properly. When this happens, I'm able to open it if I import the file into a new, clean Storyline file, but that is less than optimal. I have 8GB of RAM, and have wondered if getting more would help, but since Storyline is a 32-bit program, I should have enough RAM already.

I've asked Articulate about this, and all they tell me to do is re-install the program, which fixes nothing. I asked whether getting more RAM would help, and they wouldn't answer the question.

Hi Betzi,

I've never tried to record a Webex before, but it seems like it may be capturing the system audio (what you're hearing from your colleagues). Were you using a headset, or just through your standard desktop/laptop speakers? You may want to look at your Windows settings to see if there is an option to disable the recording of System audio. Or, set Storyline to record a particular microphone that you have already muted so there are no sounds to pick up.

150 MB Storyline file or video inserted should behave fine, but how long are you attempting to record with the screen recording? Storyline does max out at the 2-hour mark.

I also took a look at your support case, and repairing Storyline is always a good first step to make sure things are working as they'd expect. In addition to that, I like to remind folks about these best practices for working on Storyline files, as that Red X of death is typically a sign of file corruption. Also, the minimum system requirements for authoring in Storyline are available here. We only list the minimum, as anything beyond that will truly depend on how you're using Storyline and other tools, resources, applications on your computer. It's worth testing out how Storyline behaves once you close down the other programs that could be taking up memory.

Let me know if you need anything else or have other questions!

Thanks so much for the suggestions regarding the audio recordings, Ashley. This gives me several things to try - I'm sure one of them will work.

I try to keep the screen recordings to under 30 minutes if possible. Even at 30 minutes, especially with audio going into the recording, the files balloon up in size.

My system "should" work - I have 8GB of RAM, I always work from my local SSD, etc. However, I do have an Intel integrated graphics video card that shares memory with my system. I'm looking into purchasing a desktop with a dedicated video card to see if this helps Storyline run more smoothly.

Hi Betzi,

Glad that info will help - and if you would like us to take a look at one of your files, we're always happy to test it ourselves.
