Screen Recording: Last few seconds cut off when published

May 09, 2012

I made two screen recordings in SL today that play perfectly in preview.  However, in the published version, the last few seconds are cut off, which cuts off the last word or two.

Also, in the published version, I scrubbed ahead in the video to get to the next slide (there's no "Next" button, but there is a trigger to move to the next slide when the timeline ends).  When I did this, it moved the video ahead, but did not seem to advance the timeline because it did not advance to the next slide for what seems to be the amount of time that  I scrubbed ahead.  Is this the wrong trigger to use?

I've tried a few things, but my brain is just fried, and I was hoping someone might have some ideas as how to fix this.

Here's another one to try, Jill. Look at the audio track in SL's audio editor. Is the file truncated there, too? If not, try adding a couple of seconds of silence onto the end. Save and see if there is any difference when you play it.

If it is truncated (as seen in the editor), I'd guess that SL is probably not the culprit - unless maybe you originally recorded it within Storyline.

Thanks Justin,

Hurray - I was able to get the videos to play the whole way through by deleting and reinserting them.

I thought of this because there were no problems with the screen recordings - they were not cut off.  For some still-to-be-determined reason, the slide (or some other mystery culprit) was cutting the videos off.

I reinserted the videos from the published output file and it worked great!  Probably could have tried the original screencast files too, but I thought I might have the same problem.

I wanted to share this as a work-around solution for anyone who runs into this too.  And meanwhile, I'm sure the experts will get to the bottom of this!    Thanks for your help Justin.

Hi Jill, I was wondering if you had found a work around on this? I am having the same problem, my videos are cutting off about 4 seconds to early. I made sure the time line is a few seconds longer than the video lasts, and when I looked in the articulate video editor, it shows the correct video length. I even tried going into my original video file and i extended the video for 4 seconds, however that hasn't fixed the issue.

any help is appreciated!

Hi there Mary,

It seems this issue is project or system-specific. In Anna's case, it may have been due to viewing the project locally.

Doesn't sound like that's the situation for you, however, since this is happening when you preview the course.

Please make sure that you're working with local project files:

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names (this includes spaces and underscores).

Additional information regarding "Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces" in Windows operating systems can be found in the following Microsoft article.

If you are working locally and the recording still cuts off at the end, are you able to share the .STORY file here or privately?

Thanks!

I've also noticed that the last few seconds of video is being cut off in screen recordings, even before publishing. I recollect that the same thing used to happen to me in Captivate.

Typically, at the end of a given recording, there might not be any more mouse clicks or other actions on the screen, but conversation would continue. I would find that the last seconds of audio were clipped off. I'm finding the same thing happening in Storyline.

The solution in Captivate was to click the mouse or make some other sort of screen action before ending the recording process. I suspect that the same solution might work in Storyline, though I still have to test the theory. In future, when making a screen recording, I'm going to click my mouse one more time before I press Escape or click the Done button or otherwise end my screen recording.

I have a number of projects that have numerous videos in them. I am running into the same problem where random videos get cut short by a few seconds. I have extended the timelines, yet the problem still occurs randomly. I have looked all over the articulate community and have not found a solution for this. From what I find, the only answer STAFF gives is to submit the file, however I can not due to confidentiality. This is obviously a common problem. Has anyone found a TRUE solution for this problem? (Not just a work-around that works some of the time)

Thanks,

Michael

Hi Michael,

I'm sorry to hear you've run into the issue as well. Based on the last posting in this thread - and another thread here, you'll see that both Christine and I have looked for cases associated with the users who shared that information and haven't a) found a case or b) heard back from the user in the forums with additional information - which is why we've continued to ask for files.

If it's happening consistently for you, could you recreate it on a sample file with a video that isn't restricted due to the confidentiality issues? Also, if you can share with our Support Engineers we can always discuss signing an NDA if that would satisfy the confidentiality issues.
