Screen recording - of an iPad questions

Aug 21, 2012

Hi,

I am just learning how to use the Screen Recording software and have some questions.

1) Is there a limit to the number of individual try me slides that you can have in a screen recording?

2) Can I have multiple screen recordings in one Storyline file. I have a course that has multiple lessons, each lesson would contain its own screen recording

3) Is there a way after you split up the screen recording into Try Me to have a video in there as well? I am recording an iPad screen and would like for users to be able to tap through the module (tap the Setttings button, for example) but then i want to show the way the iPad looks when you swipe/move from one screen to another?

Thank you for your help,

Michele

Hi Michele,

There isn't a limit to try mode slides and yes you can have multiple screen recordings in one Storyline file.

I know that you can resize a screen recording so that there is room on a slide to insert another object like a video. As for doing that when inserting a recording in try mode, I don't know. My answer would be yes, but I would have to test this out.

Always Happy to Help,

Adrian

Hi Elizabeth,

Welcome to Heroes. To further address the issue from earlier, there is no set limit, but the longer a screen recording is, the more slides that will be made when trying to insert it as a Step by Step. For instance, an hour long screen recording will create roughly almost 1068 slides give or take a few slides. This will quickly eat up system resources and may cause Storyline to crash or freeze. You do not have this problem when just inserting it onto a single slide.

As for your question Elizabeth, you can reuse the same screen recording on multiple slides without any problem. Are you wanting to use the same recording on multiple projects?

Yes - Just a test right now, so it's very short, about 10 slides, but I will want to use the same screen capture recording in three different ways:

  1. I want users to be able to view the process
  2. I want users to try the process with 'coaching' (step-by-step instructions, captions, etc.)
  3. I want users to to 'test' their knowledge by having to click through the entire process with no prompts  (can try to get the correct click twice before automatically moving on)

I don't see the original screen capture files, and I'm not sure how to select more than one of these options when I have  completed my screen capture.

Can you help me?  Is there documentation or tutorials that can help walk me through this process?

thanks in advance,

ELizabeth

Hi Elizabeth,

I'm curious how you are capturing screens on your iPad. I am starting on a project to develop e-learning for an iPad application and I'm trying to find ways of capturing the screens in Storyline. So far, I've tried doing a screen grab on the iPad and then e-mailing the resulting image file to my laptop with Storyline on it and manually building the simulation (quite time consuming!). The only other option I see is purchasing an expensive connector/screen grabber so that the iPad screen displays on my laptop monitor. Could you share with me what you are doing for this process?

Thanks!

Leslie
