Screen Recordings - Try Mode inserting as screenshot

Apr 28, 2015

Hi! I am wanting to simply insert a screen recording as try mode but instead they are loading as a screenshot??? I have attempted with several screen recordings and they are all giving me the same issue. (SL2)

I just tried your suggestion and unfortunately the same issue :(

I recorded all my screen recordings in the one project as new scenes then planned to import as try mode or video as determined into my main project.

Simple question, do you have to immediately save a recording in try mode once you record it or is there an option to convert the screen recording into try mode later?

Once the screen recording is in your list you can create a new slide and click on it to insert.  The Insert slides screen displays and you can choose how to insert it on the new slide - as a video on a single slide, or one of the step by step modes.  I created my recording as try mode.  I then created a new slide inserted it as below by clicking to insert and then I choose to make it a video on single slide and it inserts it onto one slide as a video even though it was previously recorded as a step by step.  You can see in storyview below I have the same screenrecording in two different scenes - initially created as a try mode and then re-inserted as a single screen video.  Hope this helps

Re-posting my comments from another post (link) from yesterday, where I outline the same problem as Megan:

I have what might be a related problem. When trying to insert a new recording as step-by-step slides in Try mode, from IE (IE 9, Windows 7), Storyline (1) inserts the recording as a screenshot. Yet, when I view the recording by pressing the play button within the "Insert Slides" panel, I see all the slides. Older recordings insert just fine. A colleague had similiar issues this morning, but it seems to have resolved itself for her. She did not change any settings, repair or re-install software. I am still having issues. Recordings via Chrome work fine - some of our applications require Chrome, and some require IE. Very inconsistent behaviour today and difficult to get consistent replication. But, at the end of the day, my lengthy recordings from IE are being inserted as a single screen shot. I am not geting any error messages, just a single slide without any recording. I could not find any other posts similar to mine until I saw this one.

Hi Meg,

In addition to the troubleshooting steps Wendy mentioned, you'll want to confirm you're working with local project files as described here. And if the behavior is new to you it may also be worth going through the repair steps as detailed here.

Rory,

Thanks for sharing your file. You mentioned this only occurs in recording within IE - is it specific to the application you're recording or anything you record in IE? Are you able to try with a new version of IE? You mentioned the behavior is new recently - have you looked at going through the repair steps for Storyline 1 here?

Thanks Ashley. I just tested recording some simple browser action using IE, and had no problem inserting the video as step-by-step Try Scene. When I return to the problem application, it gets inserted as a screenshot once again. Unfortunately, the application I am recording only works with IE, so I can't test recording via a different browser, nor can I upgrade the company-mandated IE version. Because I saw the other thread which seemed similar, as a first step I added my 2 cents to what was happening to me in case it was related. Now that I know it doesn't seem to be a 'known' problem, I will try the repair steps. Thanks for confirming next steps.

Hi Rory,

If the regular browser action worked ok, it may be how that application is communicating data with IE and Storyline, and there may unfortunately not be a way around it.  You could download the trial of Storyline 2 to see if that's able to pick up more data and therefore it may be worth the upgrade cost for you. If you insert as video on a single slide, does it show everything captured? That may be what you'll need to do and build the "try it" elements on your own/from scratch based on screen capture/print elements.

Hi,

Firstly, Thanks for all your help everyone!

I have tried the repair steps and unfortunately the issue still exists! I have tested it though by recording a new screen recording in a new project, saving as video and then as try mode and it worked. The main and very big concern is all the previous screen recordings I have recorded that need to be in try mode. Not an ideal situation for the client if I have to complete the simulations again.

The only thing to check is that the screen recordings were of a shared desktop over Lync. i.e. recording the lync screen with the client completing the CRM navigation. Would this be an issue? Might articulate not be picking up the clicks etc? Hope this makes sense.

Hi Megan,

Yes, if you're recording another desktop over a shared set up, Storyline won't be able to capture the clicks or typing to insert in step by step mode as they're not happening on the computer which is conducting the recording. It'll capture the video as a normal screen recording and showing the elements that you're seeing - but any of the clicks or interactions wont' be captured in a way that could be broken down into individual slides. Hopefully you'll be able to re-conduct the recording on your own system with Storyline and the navigation occurring together.

Hi Rory,

I think in your scenario is the combination of the application, IE and Storyline and how they all play together or don't nicely in terms of capturing the click data. I'd look into using the video on a single slide and creating your own interaction slides based on taking screen captures/print screens manually vs. Storyline's screen recording.

Hi,

Working with a client right now where the recordings are made in SL2(Update 1) (IE9, Win7), and recordings are inserted as TRY. When trying to create a new scene with VIEW mode, it shows the progress bar, but no scene is made, and no error message is shown.

I have tried to copy the files to my computer running win7 and SL2-Update 4. Same issue.

Any suggestions?

Ashley Terwilliger-Pollard

Hi Niels,

So you go back up to add in a new copy of the recording as "view" mode as described here and the file acts like it's going to add it but nothing actually happens? You mentioned testing it out on your system as well and I also wanted to confirm that you're both working on project files as described here.

Since my company-mandated browser is IE9 and I can't change it even temporarily for testing, I started  experimenting with using F12 developers tools to change my browser mode. My default mode was IE9 Compatibility View. When I changed it to IE9, I was able to import my recording in TRY Mode as slides, no more screenshots only! The system-generated captions are a bit odd because they are showing up as rollovers, but I am still experimenting with the available Browser Modes and results. At least I have slides now! That is a step in the right direction.
