Screen Recordings won't insert as step-by-step slides

Oct 16, 2015

I am working on a software demonstration project and have run into a frustrating issue.  Part of the project involves a demonstration of downloading, installing and activating software.  I have recorded this sequence, which involves about 11 interactions.  When I go to insert step-by-step slides, only one slide is inserted.  It displays only a few seconds of the initial sequence.  If I insert the sequence as video on a single slide, the whole sequence is then available.

My preference is to have the sequence as single slides.  I've even tried inserting a screen capture with each interaction, but that has not worked either.

It appears that Storyline is not recognizing these interactions with the software.  I'm hoping someone has some ideas I can try.

Thanks!

Hi Todd!

When inserting a step-by-step screen recording, you may find that only the first slide (step) gets added to your Articulate Storyline course. This issue can affect any step-by-step mode (View, Try, or Test) when the application you're recording is using different security permissions than Storyline.

For example, let's say you're using Storyline to record a process in Microsoft Excel. If Excel is configured to run as an administrator and Storyline isn't—or vice versa—you may encounter the issue described above.

To correct it, ensure that both applications are using the same permissions. To check Storyline:

  1. Navigate to the following folder, depending on your version of Microsoft Windows:
    • 32-bit: C:\Program Files\Articulate\Articulate Storyline 2
    • 64-bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\Articulate\Articulate Storyline 2
  2. Right-click Storyline.exe, and choose Properties.
  3. Select the Compatibility tab.
  4. If the box is marked to Run this program as an administrator, make sure the same box is marked for the application you're recording. If it's unchecked, make sure it's also unchecked for the application you're recording.

If the issue persists after verifying that both applications are using the same security permissions, reboot your computer to resolve the conflict.

Thank you so much, Leslie!  That did the trick.  When I was downloading, installing and activating the software, my computer was doing so as administrator.  I changed the Compatibility of Storyline to run as administrator, re-recorded the sequence, and was able to add the sequence to my project as single slides.

Thanks again!

I'm having a similar problem. I'm doing a variety of short screen recordings 10 sec to 3 minutes or so of software process that we use at work. I can do the capture fine. I can insert it as a single video on a single slide fine. But when I go to try to insert it as a step by step on multiple slides it will just disappear part way through the saving and slide creation process. If I saved it as a a single video on a single slide first, I still have the video. If I try to save it initially as a step by step it sometimes will do it and other times it won't. When it won't the entire video disappears.

Hi Allain,

I'm sorry to hear about the issue you've run into! Can you let me know what version of Storyline you're working with? I'd also want to check that you're working on local project files, as working off of files from a network/shared drive is know to cause odd behavior.

I'd also suggest looking at importing your file (including the video on a single slide) into a new .story file. That simple trick often helps to resolve any "odd" behavior. Take a look at the steps here.

I'm having the exact same problem as Allain.  I'm working in SL3 and I can record my screen with no problems.  It's when I click Insert to add the recording as step by step slides, the initializing process begins, it says "creating slide 1" but part way through it just stops and disappears. The recording isn't added to the scene and it isn't available in the saved screen recordings.  It's like it just completely disappears.  My file is saved locally so I'm not working off a network server. Any ideas on what is happening?

Hi Lori,

I took a look at the case that was shared by Allain and the support engineer that she worked with was unable to replicate the issue.

We have not heard back from the user to check log files or to understand if this was an issue happening in other files either. Also to note that she was using Storyline 2 and I know you mention Storyline 3.

We can start there. Does the issue persist for you in a new file?

Todd Miller

I had reported this issue back in Oct. of 2015. Leslie sent me the information below, which solved my problem. Hopefully it will work for you too.
