Screen simulation: manipulating slide objects and action in a recorded video

Apr 02, 2020

I've recorded a short action for a sw simulation; the topic will have a demo followed by try me.

text field with drop-down and magnifying glass iconThe recorded action shows:
1)Log in 2)Click a drop-down arrow, 3)Enter text in a field, 4)Click the magnifying glass icon [next to the field], 5)Show the new page.

HOWEVER I have limited access to the data in the test site. The client provided screenshots of they way they want to display the data/UI.

Can I substitute or overlay the still shots onto the recording (they are multiple steps) slides?
Can I duplicate or manipulate the mouse movement to show a 2 part action: focus text field, enter text, and then click icon?
It seems more granular than I'm used to - what's a better/easier way to achieve a Demo--TryMe?

Good health everyone!

Hi Jerrie!

I'm happy to help!

  • If the screen recording is dispersed on separate slides already, then you can add the still shots and add hotspots.

Can I duplicate or manipulate the mouse movement to show a 2 part action: focus text field, enter text, and then click the icon?

  • Yes, you can manipulate the mouse movements to show a 2 part action. Have you tried using variables and triggers? For this specific interaction, I'd recommend changing the state of the icon to hidden when the timeline starts. And then add another trigger to Change the State of the Icon to Normal when the Timeline Reaches 2sec if the Text Entry is ≄ to blank.

  • The resolution of screen recordings could affect the grain in Storyline 360. Not to worry, I'm happy to share my suggestions.
    • First, can you customize the size of the recording to be the same as your Story Size? If at all possible, I'd keep both the screen recording and story size the same.
    • If you'd rather just show a video of your screen without requiring users to interact, then using Peek 360 might be the trick! The video is converted into an mp4 which can be imported as a video in Storyline 360.

If there is anything I missed, please let me know!
